MOTHER NATURE
We say the day la breaking
But It doesn't make a sound,
We watch the sun a setting
With no seat to sit upon.
. We all claim the night Is falling
Yet ne'er hear a thump or thud.
And in Spring the trees are
bursting
Yet no sound from twig or bud.'
We use words to picture Nature
That are silly and absurd.
For Nature goes about her
business
And is seldom ever heard.
ITJUSTISNT
It Just Isn't funny anymore.
And It will never be.
As it was before.
The days are gone.
When laughter was heard.
Now all you hear.
Is a whispered word.
Quiet steps.
Throughout the halh,
And nothing at all,
Coming through the walls.
Be careful of what
You say or do.
It might just reflect
Right back on you.
But remember.
You had your voice.
When you pulled that lever
You made your choice.
I laugh at people
Who Uve back when.
And with an opinion
It should be now as then.
What was, was. What is. is
What will be. will be.
Keep that in mind, and it
Might be better for you and mr
THURSDAY. APRIL 21,1977 THE OCEAN CITY SENTINEL-LEDGER PAGE 5 — SECTION NINE
by Mark Soifer
Public-Relations Director
. It appears that New' Jersey
and all segments of its resort
industry are at the cross roads.
Area resort industry faces growing competition, challenges
The hard, aggressive* merchandising
and marketing
people, the States with the huge
advertising and promotional
budgets, the energy crunch
with its debilitating financial
effect on families in the
Delaware Valley, are slowly
pushing our backs to the wall.
From 1964 to 1974, New
Jersey dropped from fourth to
ninth place nationally in tourist
BROOM POWER — Volunteer fireman Frank Yamanaka could find only a
broom to help with Sunday's woods fire in Marmora. Quick action by the local
volunteer firemen contained the fire to a f^w acres. If it had gotten out of hand it
would have threatened area housing. The dry weather continues the threat of
fire to area woodlands. •
Here in Ocean City, .we have
been holding our own. But a
mediocre year following a
disappointing Bicentennial
season would take its toll on
guest and apartment houses,
which are the last to fill up, and
new firms struggling to make
ends meet. .
This issue is also important to
year-arount! and summer
residents as revenues from our
resort business help to keep the
tax rate in check. Tourism is
the only industry we have.
Many industry spokesmen
are blaming State officials for
not paying more attention to
tourism. This, indeed, is part of
the problem. But it is far from
the entire problem.
There is a crying need to
become more aggressive
locally to promote programs
that will generate enthusiasm
among Delaware Valley
vacationers.
One step was taken this year
with the formation of senior
citizen package vacation plans
for the spring and fall. This
should bring us anywhere from
1,500 to 2,000 vacationers than
we did have last season. But it
is really only a beginning.
