THURSDAY. APRIL?'-1977
A warm welcome
Triis newspaper's annual Spring
Edition gives us an opportunity .to
introduce ourselves to a great many
people. " *
Hie Sentinel-Ledger is % years old
- this year - but it is our earnest effort
not to act our age. We try to combine
youthful enthusiasm with mature
journalistic judgement to produce a
complete home newspaper which is
worth buying and reading.
In the nine decades since, the Sen-
tinel-Ledger has evolved into a
thoroughly modern newspaper with a
modern offset printing plant. We are
proud that we have earned a place as a
community institution. >
Newspaper readership in Ocean City
follows a long-€stablished pattern. For.
national and international news most
people buy one or both of the
metropolitan newspapers published in
Philadelphia. For'local news people
buy the Sentinel.
This newspaper makes the earnest
effort to report all the news of our
community and nearby towns. This
accounts for the fact that so many
people on the mainland and summer
people living in nearby metropolitan
areas are regular Sentinel readers.
Editorially, the Sentinel-Ledger is
independent, taking for its basic policy
what we believe to be the greatest good
for the people of the community we
serve.
Small newspapers, just like the
large ones, receive their full share of
bouquets and brickbats We have won
a good many state awards for editorial
excellence. We have received plenty of
criticism. A great many people, we are
proud to say. swear by us. Others, and
sometimes it makes us proud, swear at
us. . • • . . • • • . ' '
Meanwhile, we continue our regular
job of news reporting in depth,
following a tradition now over nine
decades old.
If you visit Ocean City, we hope you
will become a Sentinel-Ledger reader.
We will do our best to keep you in-
formed of what goes on in this com-
munity.
Those on this newspaper's staff who
prepared this annual edition gained
new insight into the unique advantages
of our home town. We have so much to
be proud of, so much we tend to
overlook simply because we are so
familiar with our home community.
An hour or so reading the Spring
Edition is very likely to make the local
resident realize how fortunate he is to
be able tocall-Ocean City "home." It is
truly a wonderful place in which to
live, work and raise a family.
It is an axiom that word-of-mouth
advertising - the talk of those who are
satisfied with any product - is more
convincing than any other advertising.
This being true; it is an obligation of
all of us who live hero to "talk up" our
town. We should ^ consider it an
obligation to tell our friends and our
relatives who live, elsewhere how
much we like seashore living in
'America's Greatest Family Resort."
Please study the Spring Edition.
Think of the many advantages we have
as compared with those who must
spend their lives in other places.
Tell these people about our town.
You'll be doing them a genuine service
- and you will be helping Ocean City to
grow even more prosperous.
A worthwhile program
Hopefully by this summer visitors to
Ocean City will have seven new tennis
courts to play on and a new golf
driving range.
»> Contained in.-the. 1977 municipal
budget are funds tor the construction
of four new asphalt tennis courts for
the 34th st. playground and for the
resurfacing of three clay courts at the
6th st. recreation complex. Also
budgeted is $34,000 for a golf driving
range to be located adjacent to the
nine hole par three golf course at 26th
st. and Bay av.
Just three years ago the city con-
structed four tennis courts at 34th st.
Those courts and the ones at 6th st. are
in constant use most of the year. The
building of more courts will probably
not alleviate the overcrowding as
more and more people take up the
sport.
The golf driving range has been
criticized by some who consider the
construction of such a facility an
unneeded expense for the taxpayers.
While some criticism is un-
derstandable, critics should keep in
mind that a. fee will be charged for
using the range and in time the facility
should be turning a profit for the city.
Bids have been accepted for* con-
struction of the new tennis courts and
work is expected to begin in the very
near future on that protect. The golf
driving range will be built by city
workers and the land for that project
has already been filled and graded.
Ocean City's recreational facilities
and the recreation program itself are
the envy of most other communities in
this area. And the addition of the
tennis courts and driving range this
year are a guarantee that the city
government is committed to a con-
tinual upgrading of that program.
Well maintained recreational
facilities and an effectively operated
recreation program need not be ex-
pensive as so many taxpayers fear. In
addition it is an integral part of any
successful resort.
With tongue in cheek
A visit here could
i
last for a lifetime
