Republican Club seeks new'image
Out of the ashes of controversies
of the past, the
Ocean City Men's Regular
Republican Club is rising as a
new machine for both social
and political functions here.
"We're working on a new
image and you can tell from the
number of people here tonight
it's working," said Club
President John A. Bryspn at'
Monday night's -regular
monthly'meeting.
The Club has indeed committed
itself to revamping
'internal machinery and to a
vigorous and prolonged
membership drive.
A major new innovation
introduced by Bryson'that won
overwhelming support at
Monday's meeting was the use
of printed ballots for
resolutions and initiatives.
"When I go down County (to
Cape May County Republican
Organization leaders), I don't
want to have to say, 'everybody
is for something', I want
numbers," Bryson said.
While the current balloting
procedure includes a.member's
name on the tote sheet, Bryson
said he is working on a system
for controversial ballots where
an unsigned slip would be given
members who checked against
a dues paid list. ,
In another move to prevent
political power blocs from
taking over Club functions, the
steering committee Monday
recommended that trustees and
officers be barred from holding
public office; that any trustee
or officer who missed three
consecutive meetings without
sufficient reason be considered
as having resigned ancUhatan
attendance list from trustee
meetings be published.
At the last monthly meeting,
the group also voted to open up
trustee meetings to both
general membership and the
press.
The steering committee also
recommended that a
nominating committee be
elected a year before making
officer recommendations. This
again would, prevent power
blocs from "stackinglhe deck"
right before a controversial
election. >', . -
Membership . Committee
Chairman Lyndon Cortelyou
selected a large con\mittee to
contact all previous members
during the spring and to build
with new members during the
4 fall.
"Our concept- now (on.
committee work)," Bryson
said, "is to get a lot of members
on committees so everyone will
only have a little work to do and
everyone will be involved."
To spur elected Republican
officials into action, the Club
also endorsed a motion Monday
night to award every GOP
committee person*who signs up
20 new registered voters with a
$25 Savings Bond and to present
a $50 Sayings Bond to the
committee person who signs up
the highest number of
registered voters.
It also endorsed a motion to
select Gub members to help
committee members in their
political work.
"We are going to take an
active role in both Ocean City
and County politics," Bryson
said.
Recommendations of the
steering committee will be
presented to an as yet to be
formed by-laws committee.
The Ocean City Men's
Regular Republican Club
meets the third Monday of '
every month on the Music Pier,
Moorlyn ter. and the boardwalk.
The trustee meeting
begins at 7 p.m. and the regular
meeting follows at 7:45 p.m.
New colt at Smithville needs a name. Got one?
SMITHVILLE - On Good
Friday at 6:08 a.m., a new
resident arrived at the Historic
Towne of Smithville. Although
he has been here only a short
time, he has already developed
a large number of fans.
The new resident is a young
colt born to Lady, one of the
mares living in The Old Village.
A few hours after he was born,
the young fellow was already
trying out his legs with a little
support from the barn walls
and the help of Mom, but never
the less he was up!
And now he has become verybold,
exploring his part of The
Old Village which is the horse
Where am I?
barn and corral. And he has a
playmate. A colt born to
another mare a few weeks ago.
His older friend has a slight
advantage when it comes to
scampering around the corral
but our younger friend is
learning quickly, and soon he
will begin training to become a
working member of The Old
Village.
Our young friend has one
slight problem/ He has no
name. That is being left up to
the friends of Smithville to
decide. The person with the
name judged most appropriate,
will be awarded a gift certificate
for purchases in the
Historic Towne of Smithville's
shops or Inns. Send your
favorite name along with your
name and address to: Name
Gas Co. to aid solar heat experiments
ASBURY PARK—New
Jersey Natural Gas Company
has announced that it will
participate in experimental
projects with solar heat as an
auxiliary source of energy.
W.D. Williams, president of
the company, in making the
announcement, did not
elaborate on the details but said
that the company has reached
agreement "with a responsible
contractor for experimental
work on several projects to
determine if solar heat is
y practioal and can .be used in a
regular' delivery of - natural
gas."
The projects undertaken will
be with the purpose of learning
whether the solar collector
system can be used to provide
sufficient energy for hot water
for domestic purposes and for
swimming pools.
"If this proves practical,"
Mr. Williams said, "it would be
a major means of alleviating
the available natural gas
supply. The amount of energy
that would be available for
water heating purposes would
then be used to further stretch
out the natural gas supply for
the more important end-use of
home heating, for which there
is the greatest demand.
"The experimentation with
pointed out that New Jersey
The
the Township," said former
Township Treasurer Georgette
G. i3ond, who Sunday an-
nounced she would run for the
position as a Democrat.
She said she has received the
endorsement of the local
Democratic Club and will run
on the June primary ballot
without, opposition.
Incumbent Republican Tax
Collector Eugene- Flaccone
replaced former Tax Collector
Gertrude Shourds last month
after Mrs. Shourds resigned in
a flurry of controversy over the
administration's refusal to
provide additional help.
Fiaccone has indicated he
will run for a full term
November and apparently has
the backing of the Petersburg
Republican Club.
At the same time, however,
Mrs. Bond apparently has the
support of the dissident Upper
Township Regular Republican
Club, a group that broke from
the Petersburg-based GOP
organization in the late '50s.
Mrs. Bond said she is running
for the position because she is
qualified and can win.
