There are the necessary
funds in the City's new capital
improvement budget to
finance construction
estimated to be slightly more
than $34,000.
The new facility is to be
located on the east side of
Shelter rd, just off Tennessee
av. It will be adjacent to the
Humane Society building and
the golf course, but away
from the municipal airport.
The range itself will be 400
feet wide and 590 feet deep.
Golfers will drive from 18 tee
mats at the north end of the
property and drive south. The
mats will be eight feet apart.
Included in the plans are two
optional light standards for
night driving. There will be
fiveyardmarkers and targets
located on the range. Also to
be included is a-"chipping
area" and off-street parking.
Some $14,000 of the
proposed $34,000 price tag will
go for fencing the area. Grass
seed, a service shack, and
paving of the parking area
account for another $10,000.
Another $5,000 has been
allocated Tor services and
labor costs such as grading
the area, electrical service
and actual construction of
fences and the installation of
yard markers.
A total of $4,600 will be spent
to set up the driving range
operation including $3,000 for
1500 dozen golf balls.
Whale racks
once on beach
The Ocean City beach at
one time in early history was
quite prominent in thew oldtime
whaling industry.
Early settlers in the area
put up 'T&iding racks" at
various points along the
beach. The whalers plying the
North Atlantic would bring
their catch to Peck's Beach.
Workers would rend the
blubber and drain the oil. The
product of their labors was
then put in containers and
hauled to the market in the
nearby Philadelphia area.
Whales have been sighted in
the waters off the Ocean City
beach down through the.
years. However, these are
usually mavericks separated
from their herd, which
prefers the cooler waters of
the North Atlantic.
Railroad service to Ocean
City from the nearby
Philadelphia metropolitan
area is essential to thousands
of rail users in the Cape-
Atlantic area of Southern New
Jersey, including hundreds
here in Ocean City.
Time was when rail excursion
trains to the seashore
were a popular outing for
Middle Atlantic states shore
vacationers. Year's- ago the
. Saturday and Sunday one-day
excursions to the shore were
very popular and profitable to
the railroads.
However, the advent of, and
the advances in automobiles
made inroads on railroad
travel volume in the seashore
area, and several times over
the years the railroad
threatened to cut all but
freight service to and from
the beach.
But passenger rail service
is important in the shore
area's economy. In Ocean
City alone there are hundreds
of families whose breadwinners
are required to travel
to the Philadelphia area and
back each day because of
their work. The commuter
segment of the resort's
population multiplies considerably
during the summer
months when metropolitans
are in their summer homes at
the shore.
The rail service is important
to more than just the
summer residents. The yeararound
commuter element of
the resort's population
depends on the trains and hat
formed the Commuters Club.
The purpose of the group is to
keep daily rail service
operating between here and
Philadelphia and even improve
the service and rail
equipment where possible.
HOMETOWN BOY — Ocean City is the hometown
of Second Congressional District Representative
William J. Hughes. The Congressman maintains his
beachfront home here in Ocean City. The Second
Congressional District covers all of the Southern New
Jersey peninsula, which includes four counties and
part of a fifth. Here Rep. Hughes, accompanied by
his wife and son, greets constituents from an
automobile in a local holiday parade.
ACTIVITY FOR ALL — The Ocean City Department of Recreation is
possibly the largest organization of its kind along the Jersey coast. The
Department considers the preferences of all ages and makes every effort
to provide something in its program for their enjoyment. Here some
young people have a go at volleyball at the Recreation Center.
The commuters, with the
help of city officials and other
interested groups, is constantly
in supplication with
State and Federal transportation
agencies and officials
to maintain, and even
better where possible, the
commuter train service.
The- Commuter Club's
representative at meetings
with State and Federal
transportation heads and with
the railroad interests have
recommended to the State
Department of transportation
that the- trains should be
cleaned inside and out on a
regular basis; heating and
airconditioning units should
be repaired; commuter fare
structures should be
decreased to make them
competitive with buses, and
schedules should be advertised.
Other suggestions ask that
locations of train stations
should be marked by easy-tosee
bWboardy, taw.for occasional
riders "should be
lowered to encourage use of
the line, and that weekend and
off-peak-hour service should
be increased beyond the
summer months.
Currently, the line operates
two morning runs to Lindenwold
near Philadelphia
and two returning runsdWing
week days in the summerjand
one round-trip in the winter
from Ocean City and other
Cape May County communities.
It also has weekend excursion
trips from Lindenwold.
While continued service to
the commuters is the prime
objectives of the negotiations,
the argument is advanced
that with better, faster and
more modern equipment the
long-gone age of the seashore
railroad excursion could be
revived. Strength is added to
this argument, the commuters
say, because of the
rising cost of automobiles and
congested highways to and
from the shore in peak
vacation periods.
