Surf fishing
tournament
Fishing is not the exclusive
sport of boat owners.' Surf
fishing' is one of the more
popular pasttimes at Ocean
City at almost all times of the
year: .
The highlight of the surf
fishing activity here is. the
annual 'Ocean City Surf
Fishing Tournament, to be
staged this year on September

The sponsoring groups are"
the City Recreation Department,
the Ocean City Fishing
Club and the Margate Surf
Fishing Club.
A Held of surf fishing clubs
from the East Coast area will
compete. Each club has a sixmember
team fishing in. a
one-block zone.
The clubs compete for
plaques and large silver trays
offered the first, second
and third place teams. There
are also individual awards for
the most fish beached, and the
largest fish caught. Weakfish,
kingfish, flounder,
bluefish, striped bass and
croakers will be the species to
be scored.
Women as well as men will
be knee deep in the Ocean City
surf in the two-day event,
angling for the prize fish.
Part of the program is a
buffet .supper following the
competition.

ILLEGAL QUIETUDE — It is not legal to fish from the jetties along
the Ocean City beachfront, but occasionally one can get away with it. The
city maintains a fishing jetty and frowns on angling from other stone
piles. Here a young angler patiently awaits the bite that will break his

Cape fishing the best
Sailing around the Cape a
fisherman can almost call his
shots on the species of fish he
catches.
Cape May County is the
southern tip of New Jersey
arid it juts out like a peninsula
into the breakwater where the
Delaware River flows into the
Atlantic Ocean,
. As if bay fishing and ocean
fishing were not enough, there
are a number of fresh water
ponds and streams on the
Cape mainland where the
largemouth bass, pickerel;
perch and panfish are
receptive to the baited hook.
And it is all for more than
just fishing fun. Prizes are
offered the best catches in the
whole spectrum of species '
available in local waters.

Board of Freeholders, the
Annual Cape May County
Fishing Tournament, runs
annually from January 1 to
December 31.
Anglers wishing to compete
for prizes can get a list of the
official weighmastere, contest
rules and regulations, along
with a vacation guide of the
Cape, by writing the
Department of Public Affairs,

Starting in Delaware Bay
on the west side of the Cape,
the angler can take the huge
drumfish, the sea trout,

Rounding the Cape, for
offshore trolling, the angler
will be in the area for big
marlin, bluefish, albacore,
tuna, bonito, wahoo and
dolphin. .
Closer to the beach there
are fluKe, winter flounder,
weakfiah, kingfish, -bluefish
and spotted bass. These
species can also be found in
the . many creeks and
thorofares of the Inland
Waterway which courses
behind the barrier islands on
which are located the Cape's
seashore resorts.
And all the fishing fun is not
entirely confined to the
summer season. Winter
fishing offers cod and haddock,
mackerel, herring, sea
bass, tautog, porgies, fluke,
winter flounder tmd other
bottom feeding species.
Citations and bronze
recognition pins are offered in
the county tournament in 30
categories.
