Harbormasters
protect boaters
Harbormasters appointed
by the New. Jersey Department
of Conservation and
Economic Development serve
as traffic officers and. floating
boating advisors on Ocean
City's wide system of
Waterways during the summer
months.
The weight of the state's
official authority is behind the
harbormasters, and disorderly
persons charges are
brought against boat
operators who challenge their
authority.
The boats in which the
harbormasters patrol are
.marked by the flag of the
Department of Navigation,
which is yellow with~the state
emblem. In addition the
patrol boats fly a blue pennant
with the word "Harbormaster."
The nautical
traffic cops are dressed in
olive drab and wear badges.
There is little chance of
anyone failing to recognize
them.
The harbormasters here
comprise Flotilla E of the
State Harbor Patrol. It has
jurisdiction over the entire
inland waterway and also the
three-mile limit area offshore.
The harbormasters do not
enforce any arbitrary speed
limits on boats. The emphasis
is on safety, and the size of the
Skiiefs- are warned to
of Beach Thorofare between
9th and 19th sts, and are
warned to stay a reasonable
distance from the shore so
that their wake does not
damage tied-up boats, piers
and other bayfront installations.
The harbormasters came
into action in 1956 when the
freedom of the waters was
threatened by boaters with no
regard for the safety of
others.
Jogging at shore
Jogging is exercise for
improving . the physical
condition, and in Ocean City it
is a competitive sport.
The ' City Recreation
Department in August
sponsors an annual Summer
Run. The races are held on the
recreation center running
oval.
More than 100 joggers
competed in last year's event,
which covered distances of
one and two miles, and which
included competitors ranging
in age from 11 years to 50 and
more years.
\ FISHING ONLY
CITY OCtlNCIlV '
iNtn.y
Jetty fishing
popular activity
In most cases,' fishing from
ocean jetties is discouraged
by the city officials. The
footing is insecure, and the
would-be fisherman would be
required to pick his way along
I the jagged edges of the rocks
to get to the end where the
fishing is suitable.
However, a few years ago
the city officials noted an
increase in the interest in
jetty surf fishing and
established the 400-foot long
jetty at the 5th st. beach as a
fishing deck.
City workers in the offseason
poured fresh cement in
the crevices between the
rocks until a smooth, level
"pavement" stretched from
the boardwalk to the end of
the jetty.
Then as a safety measure, a
galvanized iron hand rail,
similar to that which lines the
outer side of the boardwalk,
was placed along both sides of
the jetty for its entire length.
In addition to providing safety
for the anglers, it also proved
to be a good "leaning rail" as
they plumb the surf for
kingies and weakies.
The jetty found such great
receiption with the surf
fishermen, particularly at
good fishing tide times, the
City decided to put lights up
on the fishing deck so that the
anglers could enjoy their
sport at any time of the day...
or night.
Any day during the summer
months a legion of inveterate
surf fishermen line the edges
of the fishing deck angling for
the marine delicacies in the
shallow, sandy bottom of the
surf at that point.
Kingfish, weakfish and an
occasional sea bass like to
nibble the marine life which
abounds on the rocks of the
score or so jetties which help
to save from erosion the
bathing beaches in Ocean
City.
The "deck"^ was originally
constructed as a bulwark
against the erosion action
which eats away at the local
beaches. The jetty is one of a
number of stone extensions
into local surf. -
AT REST — A popular activity at the Ocean
City beach is surf sailing. Here a fleet of boats
rest against a dune awaiting word from their
skippers to go into the water and sail.
GOOD SINGING
Choral singing is a popular
form of entertainment in
Ocean City during the summer
months, and no group
does it any better than the Lu
Lu Shrine Chanters. They will
be on the Boardwalk Music
Pier on June 25, if you're
interested.
Crabbing
One of the more popular seafoods is the crab
Local waters abound with them
Crabbing in Cape May
County's inland waterway
perennially produces excellent
catches of blueclaws.
The late summer and early
fall season is .the best'time for
crabbing because the crabs
tend to run larger in size, and
therefore more meaty; and
they are more numerous at
that time.
Crabbers who plan to enjoy
some of the area's fine
crabbing activity to be sure to
have proper condtainere in
which to keep the crabs as
they are being caught. Many
persons keep the crabs in
buckets or coolers in which
they have put some sea water
or ice, and that many of the
crabs will die if so handled.
It is better to keep the crabs
in a peach basket or bushel
basket covered with a wet
burlap bag or cloth, or some
wet seaweed. To keep the
crabs alive, it is also
recommended that a bucket
of water be poured over them
or the basket should be
dunked into the water occasionally.
NAFEC pursues
flight safety plans
The National Aviation
Facilities Experimental
Center at Pomona, NAFEC,
as it is popularly known, is in
business basically to prove or
disprove safety factors in
availation systems, and also
to ascertain that the theory,
equipment and proposals of
such systems are valid and
devised with safety in mind.
Many of the scientists and
other workers, at NAFEC,
located about 10 miles away
on the mainland, make their
homes in Ocean City.
In the mid-1950's it became
apparent that systems of
flight control in use
throughout the country were
outmoded. The airplane had
made such technoiogial advances
since World War II
that air space was becoming
less and less plentiful for man
and bird.
Forecasts for the future of
the industry call for substantial
increase in air
transportation, both commercial
and private. Added to
this ever increasing volume of
air travel is the fact that
airplanes of the future will be
flying faster and faster, thus
complicating the safety
factors of air travel further.
Today, airlines are flying
more passengers. At any
given hour there are as many
as 70,000 people airborne over
the United States. In addition
to increased passenger travel,
individuals and private
companies are purchasing
planes and flying more.each
year. It is only natural that
systems must be perfected for
the safe use of air space.
NAFEC laboratories have
approximately 300 projects
under study constantly. Many
are geared to the future, and
many continue under study
for many years, while others
YOUR CHOICE — Between Ocean City and
Strathmere to the south is a bridge for
automobile traffic. On the ocean side of the
bridge is constructed a ramp for fishing and
crabbing. So you see, you don't need a boat to
fish in Ocean City.
are more current. They are
handled on a priority basis.
Automated traffic control
systems are under study
making use of computers in
the communication between
the pilot in the aircraft and
the traffic controller in the
tower.
Crabbers utilize box or star
traps, hand lines .and scoop
nets to secure a supply of
crabs. Some .crabbers are
successful in wading shallow
flats with a net and others
catch crabs by drifting or
poling a boat along the many
banks in the inland waterway,
and scooping up the crabs
along the shore. Beat bait is
mossbunker (menhaden).
Crabs are excellent table
fare when steamed with a
commercial crab oil or
cooked in spaghetti sauce.
Many people steam crabs in a
'boil' made of a can or two of
beer, crushed hot red pepper,
thyme, bay leaves and a touch
of vinegar.
Crabs do not freeze well, but
some catch a quantity of
crabs, clean them uncooked,
and freeze them'in plastic
containers filled with water to
cover the crabs.
Whether for a crab feast,
spaghetti sauce or for future
use, crabbing is excellent in
late summer and early fall on
the Jersey Cape.
