Fishing at
Some anglers like to play stream fish, others go for river fishing, but
nowhere is a fisherman likely to find more fish and in boundless variety
than in the ocean. Here at Ocean City we love our fishing. Only during the
bitter winter months when the fish seek warmer climes does the fishing
sport abate here. But once the ocean and bay waters begin to warm up,
the fish come in and the fisherman go out. There are more dinner table
species of fish caught here than almost anywhere on the east coast. The
photographs are examples of the fun of fishing at Ocean City.
OFF-SEASON ANGLERS-Not all fishing at
Ocean City is done during the warm months of
the year. Inveterate fishermen will find a way
'o wei their line no matter what season of the
year. The late fall and early winter is good
fishing at the resort. A few stragglers from the
summer schools are around and the winter
species of fish are in the surf. This scene from a
beachfront jetty.
ADVICE TO FLYERS
The Ocean City municipal
airport on the bay side of town
is the shape of a "T" with two
intersecting runways or
landing strips. However, in
deference to home owners of
the central-city districts,
pilots must follow a flight
pattern from north to south
strip. This system keeps
virtually all low-flying aircraft
from going over the
built-up neighborhood.
Ocean City Fishing Club beach pier
reflects a long and interesting history
Fishing in the surf is.
probably one of the oldest
spqrts events in the history of
man, dating back to when fish .
taken from the surf was one of
/the principal sources of food
for early mankind.
Surf fishing, however, is
more a matter of fun for
"several hundred members of
the Ocean City. Fishing Club
which is headquartered on the
14th st. fishing pier on the
Ocean City beach.
In addition to pursuing
their favorite sport on the
Ocean City beachfront, the
Fishing Club is represented
by teams in surf fishing
tournaments all the way from
New York to North Carolina.
Organized in 1913, the
membership of the Ocean City
Fishing Club comprises yeararound
residents and summer
property owners who use its
decks for their fraternal
activities.
was created by ah Act of
Congress in 1939 specifically
to assist the Coast Guard in
the protection of life and
property on the water.
The Auxiliary accomplishes
its mission in boating safety
with' three features...
education in boat
handling, voluntary boat
inspections and frequent and
widespread patrols of the vast
expanse of bay and ocean
perienced boatmen cover a
curriculum which includes
everything one should know
about operating a boat, from
. rules of the road to knot tying.
The inspection program is
conducted by the Auxiliary at
the city's boat ramp on Beach
Thorofare at Tennessee av.
Again experienced boatmen
look over the craft to be inspected
pointing out anything
that may cause malfunction
of the boat or violate safety
codes. Boats that meet the
requirements are marked '
with a decal. The decal is not
obligatory on any boat, but
one does help to protect the
boat owner from being
bothered by random inspection
by U.S. Coast Guard
officials.
Every day during the
boating season the Auxiliary
has boats and men afloat on
the bay to be of any assistance
they can to boatmen, whether
it be merely glvmgittrecttan*
or assisting in an emergency.
The Auxiliarists have no
enforcement powers, but it is
wise for the boatmen to pay
heed to their advice when
given. They work under the
supervision of the Coast
Guard, and often assist the
Guard in search and rescue
work.
To be eligible for membership
in the Coast Guard
Auxiliary, a person must be a
United States citizen, 17 years
of age or older, own not less
than 25 percent interest in a
Ocean City the annual casting
tournament on August 13 this
year at the Bay av. ballfield.
It is expected that 21 casting
teams along the coast from
Long-island to Virginia will
participate.
The Fishing Club and the
City also sponsor an annual
Surf Fishing Tournament,
which will be staged this year
on September 24 on the beach
south from 29th st. to 50th st.
About 400 anglers are expected
for the event.
The Ocean City Fishing
Club was organized in 1913
with the express purpose of
establishing a surf fishing
pier and clubhouse on the
beachfront here in Ocean
City. The club gained riparian
rights, purchased the
property and in 1915 the pier
was constructed. Membership
was limited to 300, and this
quota was quickly filled.
The Club launched a
program of social and
sporting activities which
added to the gaiety of the
already full' beachfront
program of events-. The'
principal-event proved to be
the Ocean City Cup casting
tournament staged on the 10th
st. beach that summer.
According to news reports
of the event, a crowd of more
than 5,000 persons watched
this competition. So well
received was the event that
the city officials provided a
permanent trophy to be
awarded to the winner of the
annual event.
Down over the years, some
of the best casting teams
along the Atlantic Seaboard
have invaded Ocean City in
quest of the honor of having
the name of their sponsoring
community engraved on the
great cup. The original cup
was destroyed in a fire in 1920,
but eas replaced with an exact
duplicate which was insured
for 11,500.
The fire which destroyed
the Ocean City Cup was not
the only, problem to beset the
Ocean City Fishing dub. A
few months after the pier was
completed in October 1915, a
storm caused. 175 feet of -the
original structure to be
destroyed.
In March 1962 the pier was
totally destroyed by the
ruinous Atlantic Storm which
ripped the Southern New.
Jersey beachfront.
The club members the
following year constructed a
new fishing deck, running 420
feet out over the surf. For the
summer of 1984 a new
clubhouse was erected and
. things were almost back to
normal.
In 1965 the club took on a
project to extend the fishing
pier to the 550 feet which was
its original length, and to'
revive the membership which
sagged somewhat while the
pier rebuilding job was in
progress.
A new 126-foot extension to
the Ocean City Fishing Pier
was dedicated.
In addition to the
the fellowship can be
Electronic devices
ferry safety measure
The installation of new
electronic navigation
equipment aboard vessels of
the Cape May (N.J.)-Lewes
(Del.) brings a measure of
added safety to that plasant
crossing of lower Delaware
Bay.
The equipment, known as
Loran-C, consists of two
elements - a receiving unit
which continually displays the
position of the vessel in the
water, and a plotter unit
which plots the path of the
vessel. Once plotted, the
vessel can retrace the exact
route of anv suhseatient
crossing. This capability'
means that routes can be
established through the
shallow-water Crow Shoal
area and in jetty and terminal
maneuvers.
The Loran-C installation is
expected to be a U.S. Coast
Guard requirement for all
large vessels in the near
future.
The estimated installed
price for each vessel is approximately
$10,000. Selection
of the optimum equipment
will follow a review of competitive
models.
