Never too young
Years of experience doesn't necessarily a
fisherman make. The youngsters in these photos
haven't been angling that many years. But in the
Recreation Department's Young People's
Fishing Tournament, the angling is enhanced
with prizes for certain size and species of fish.
July 16 this year the young anglers will gather
again along the uptown beach to try their luck.
SPRING EDITION — 1977
Beachcombers encouraged
to search out rare shells
The success of this pilot
project has prompted another
call for shells by the City's
Public Relations Department.
Beachcombers will again be .
awarded certificates and a
sophisticated system of gold
and silver stars is being
researched to provide special
recognition for those who
bring in more than the ten
required shells. Beachcombers
who deliver the
coveted Conch shell will also
receive additional stars on
their certificates.
"It works in Kindergarten
and First Grade so why
shouldn't it work with beachcombers,"
was the Public
Relations Department's reply
when questioned about the
logic of awarding stars with
the certificates.
Beachcombers may bring
their collections to the Public
The shells are given away
free at the City's Information
whom had never seen the
After the cup's latest value
was reported it was removed
from circulation and put on
on special occasions. One of
During the years of competition,
the average casting
distance per man (for a fiveman
team) has ranged from
292.7 feet to 475.11 feet.
Casters in pre-cup tournaments,
have exceeded 600
feet or more than twice the
length of two football fields.
Equipment- improvement is
credited for the distance
changes over the years.
During the 1920'sa publicity
stunt was held in Yankee
Stadium in New York matching
the immortal Babe
Ruth with Harold Lentz,
world champion caster. The
.contest was won by Lentz who
cast further than Babe could
hit a pitched ball that afternooa
Club, co-sponsors of the event,
with the City, is the only one of
the original casting teams
still participating in the
tourney. Casting in competition
is described by
veteran sportsman Harold T.
Gray, of Ocean City, as "a
classic example of strict
discipline and use of special
skill, as only one backlash,
one line break or one infraction
of the rules such as
stepping over the foul line can
ruin the chances for a team
winning the cup."
This Surfcasting Tournament
is free to the public.
The mainland cattlemen
hereded their stock across the
meadows and swam the bays,
