Prior to. the start of the
Green Acres program In 1981,
the open space lands In the
two Southern New Jersey
counties owned by the federal,
state and county governments
totalled 79,722 acres. Today
the total acreage has been
increased to 148,943 acres by
the movement.
The purpose of the Green
Acres program is to preserve
as much of the natural
countryside as possible
without interfering with the
orderly development of
residential, business and
industrial area.
Most of the acreage in the
program will be retained in its
virgin state, while some will
be developed into public state
parks for the enjoyment of
residents and visitors alike

Storm alert warns resort of approaching blow
The Cape May County
Office of Civil Defense has
acquired another weapon in
its arsenal of public service
and protection. Known as a
"Storm-Alert" it is intended
for use in professional
weather stations to measure
atmospheric static electricity.
The Storm-Alert keeps a
constant count of electrical
impulses caused by lightning
discharges and interprets,
them aB an indicator of the
approach,of severe Uwn->
threshold has been exceeded,
a red light flashes and beeps
sound.
Every time lightning
flashes within the range of the
instrument, a yellow light will
flash. Initial indications show
a storm at a distance of 100
miles. As the storm approaches,
the Storm-Alert
indicator shows the 50-mile
limit, followed by 25 and 10mile
lights as the storm
arrives. In a very widespread
storm all warning lights will

front communities of heavythunderstorms

from a distance of 100 miles.
This will enable lifeguards to
clear beaches and advise
persons on the beach of an
impending storm so that they
might return home to close
open windows.
THE THINKERS — The program offered by
the Ocean City Recreation Department each
summer extends beyond kids andjdaygrounds.
One of the major attractions offered by the
recreation people are chess tournaments. Here
strategists plots moves against one another on
the Boardwalk Music Pier.

safety flags. The flags are
distributedby the Ocean City -
Board of Realtors in the in-
terest of public safety. The
bright pink flag atop a high
pole gives motorists plenty of
