New recreation complex
planned in airport area
Plans are in the making tor
a recreational complex in the
area of "the Ocean City
Municipal Airport and the city
golf course near, the centercity
bay front. .
The first phase of the plans
to develop a recreational
complex in the vicinity, of .the
airport is' a bicycling path
through the meadowlands
abounding the area.
The bike path will start near
the Humane Society animal

around the municipal airport

runway and back to the air-.

The path will follow already
filled but undeveloped land,
and future plans call for it
somehow to wind along the
back of the golf course. It will
be approximately eight feet
wide andwill be paved with
some sort of light surfacing.

The Cape May County free
public library at Court Houseis
located in new. more
spacious quarters this year in
a large style building which
also houses the offices of the
couniy government.
The" first iloor of the attractive
complex is occupied
by the County library which
offers a variety of materials
for study, research and just
plain reading in comfortable
and quiet surroundings. The
librarv section also includes a
meeting room.
On the second floor are the
County administration of-
• (ices, including a meeting
room for the County Board of
Chosen Freeholders.
There are 19.000 square feet
of space alloted to the library.
A loo-seat meeting room is
used jointly by the library and
the county officials. The
library also has 60 percent of
the. space available in the
large basement of the
structure.
• and small trees to give bike
riders and pedestrians the
best access to view birds,
wildlife and vegetation in that
area.
Some form of lighting is
I planned for the path and
. benches, water fountains
(where possible> and trash
receptacles will be placed
along it.
Although the path is
planned primarily for
bicycles it will be open to
pedestrians as well. However,
bikes will have the right of
way and signs will be posted
to that effect.
The major benefit of this
path is that people will be able
to carry their bikes to the path .
in automobiles and park their
cars at the airport or boat
launching areas. The path is
away from major highways
and will be safe for children.
The bike path is the first
phase of planning a city-wide
bike path running from the
north to south ends of the
island. Such a path must be
built in phases and completion
of a through artery for bikes is
still several years away.
There is a possibility of
federal funding for the project
in the years ahead.

Christmas
in Ocean City
Romanticists tell us there is nothing like the Christmas season in a
small town. Granting that metropolitans find something special about
city sidewalks at Yuletide, the folks of this small seashore town make the
most of the Christmas season. A standard custom at Christmastime is the
community welcome to Santa Claus upon his arrival'in Ocean City.

Multi-colored lights gleam
like gems in the December
night when Ocean City
householders and business
places herald the Christmas
season with traditional
decorations.
The colorful display, of
holiday lights and augmenting
decorations in Ocean City
rivals Christmas lighting
displays to be found in any
community, large or small, in
the country.
In many of the families in
the nearby metropolitan
areas and in many of the
suburbs between, a trip to
Ocean City during the
holidays "to see the lights" is
becoming a traditional
Christmas custom.
The entire community
cooperates. Householders
decorate their homes, and
businessmen deck their

establishments with the art of
the joyous season. The city
government decorates
municipal buildings and
strings lights on streets
throughout the city.
In addition the city
government encourages the
decoration of private homes
and business buildings by
offering cash prizes to those
judged to be the best
decorated. About $300 in
prizes are offered for the best
decorated homes and shops,
and for window painting and
door decorations.
The judges make their
selections on such points as
subject matter and interpretation,
design, artistic
merit, composition and color
execution, effort expended
and originality. The panel of
judges tour the city to personally
inspect the
decorations.
