Hospital services expanded

Shore Memorial major hospital
Shore Memorial Hospital in
.Somers Point on the hea*by
mainland is one of Ule major
medical -institutions in the
Southern New Jersey.
What began earlier in the
century as a convalescent
home on the west bank of
Great Egg Harbor Bay has
developed into a major
medical facility. The six-story
structure sprawls through
three wings, the latest of
which was opened with
ceremonies June of 1976.
The first floor of the new
West Wing houses medical
records, medical library,
pharmacy, central supply,
purchasing and the morgue.
The second floor has an
employees cafeteria, kitchen
and dietary offices. The North
end of the second floor has an
obstetrical labor and delivery
suite.
The third floor houses a
complete surgical suite in-
cluding recovery room and
out patient surgery.
'. The .fourth,floor has a new
intensive care unit, post intensive
.. care unit and
coronary care unit. There are
also classrooms on this floor.
The fifth floor houses 44
medical-surgical patients
beds and a solarium for
patients and their visitors.
. The sixth floor is ' for
mechanical equipment such
as boilers, - chillers,
generators and transformers.
In addition, the hospital's
Regional Dialysis Center, 415
Shore rd., Somers Point, waB
completed this year and will
serve patients'from Atlantic,
Cape May, Cumberland,
Salem Counties and other
areas.
Three hundred eighty
- volunteers contributed a total
of 37,032 hours of needed
service to 24 hospital
departments in 1976.
Area medical center
The Clinical-Laboratory
increased its work load 13.4
percent by conducting 280,293
tests during the year. The
Medical Technicians Training
Program in the Laboratory,
in conjunction with Atlantic
Community College, received
accrediation from the Board
of Registry of the American
Society of Clinical
Pathologist.
A * total of 47,352 x-ray
examinations were completed
by the X-Ray Department
In addition to the continued
provision of outstanding
nursing care, the Nursing
Division of Shore Memorial
Hospital implemented new
policies to better serve our
patients and their families. A
modified rooming-in program
was initiated in the hospital's
Maternity Department. This
program allows the newborn
baby to room-in with the
mother under nursing
Bion.
Visiting privileges in the
Pediatrlc \ Department were
.expanded'early in 1976. With
permission from the
physician, and under certain
circumstances, a mother may
stay 24° hours a day with her
child.
The education programs
held by the Nursing Division
for the hospital's patient*
have been expanded and
improved. A total of 426 expectant
parents completed a
seven week instructional
program. The education
program for patients with
myocardial infarctions has
been revamped and improved.
Ninety patients with
diabetes received instructions.
There are also
patient education programs
for pre-op patients,
mastectomy patients and
colostomy patients.
New health care center for shore
Ocean City has an easily
accessible medical care
facility as a result of funds
that were recently granted by
a Federal health program.
Memorial Park Medical
Center in Belcoville was
granted $197,408 to expand
and coordinate rural health
care services in a multicounty
area to include
Atlantic and Cape May
Counties.
Located in an extension in
Wayside Village in Marmora,
the facility will ultimately
have a family physician, a
laboratory, an EKG unit, an
ambulance entrance and
procedure room. Marmora is
two miles across the
meadowlands from Ocean
City.
Middle-level emergencies
can be treated at the new
facilities while more serious
problems are forwarded on to
either Shore . Memorial

Medical emergencies from
Ocean City formerly were
handled at Shore Memorial,
which meant that ambulances
had to traverse the Ocean
City-Somers Point Causeway,
hazarding the possibility of .
bridge openings at either of
the two lift briges along that

Marmora is accessible by a
fixed-span structure and
therefore presents fewer .
problems for ambulance runs.
The target is to handle
current needs in the area with
a goal of ultimate expansion.
The grant, awarded under
- the auspices of the Federal -
Health Care Delivery in
Underserved Rural Areas -
(HURA) program of the '
United States Public Health
Service, also enables the
Belcoville Center to expand
its initial service area of
Hamilton, Weymouth and
Estelle Manor Townships to
include Upper Township and
Dennis Township in Cape May
County, and Buena Vista
Township in Atlantic County.
HURA funds are intended to'
expand services rather than
subsidize fees for services.
Under this program, the
Belcoville Center immediately
adds one full-time .
family physician, one nurse
practioner and a patient
educator-consultant within
the next two or three months.
The Center also plans to add
another full-time physician in
July, 1977, a second nurse
practitioner in January, 1978.
A full-time patient educator
and consumer educator was
added in 1977.
In addition, the Center will
provde expanded optometric
and OB-GYN services and
will have an opthalmologist

available for four to eight
hours a month.
The Center will also be
providing various preventive
services including family
planning, maternal and child
health services.
Special screening programs
in cancer, hypertension, lung
disease and sickle cell disease
are also planned.
An, integral part of the
Center's prevention program
will be a community health
education program which will
include utilization of the
health care syBtem, basic
health needs, and the importance
of continuity of
health care.
Memorial Park's HURA
project policies will be made
by a board of directors
representing all segments of
the service area's population,
including at least 50 percent
consumers.
