THE OCEAN CITY SENTINEL LEDGER
Beachfront backdrop for Art Show
Dr. Marcia Smith is more of
an innovator than she' will
give herself credit for. Ask'
, her about her role in the birth
of the Ocean City Boardwalk
Art Show, and she will
modestly reply:
' "I don't wish to take the
credit for it. Jim Penland and
the people who worked on the .
show and the merchants in
town deserve more credit
than I do There wasn't much
innovation on my part. It was
an idea whose time had
come."
When coaxed. 'Dr. Smith
might reluctantly reveal.that,
while many Ocean Cityites
talked art show back in 19G2.
she was the individual who
approached James F.
.Penland with the funds to.
launch the first Boardwalk
Art Show.
Dr. Smith could not have
realized, at thai time, that the
annual show would more than
double in size between 1962
and 1975. More important for
Ocean City, the show was the
impetus for a permanent art
center, dedicated on July 23,
1966, the day of the fifth annual
show.
The Boardwalk Art Show,
now a major cultural event in
South Jersey, has experienced
growing pains since
its inception, but Arts Center
director Frances Taylor
stands firm in the main objective
of the show.
"We are in the business of
promoting art and artists,"
Mrs. Taylor said. "We try to
present the best available art
to the public."
In order to maintain a high
quality show, old practices
have been altered; some have
even been dropped altogether.
The first Boardwalk Show
in 1962 hosted approximately
300 artists. The number of
entries grew steadily each
year. By' last year, the
directors of the show had to
introduce a new policy.
Artists wishing to participate
in the show were
required" to submit slides of
their work to the judges. Only
on the approval of the judges
did the artists receive a
registration form. ,
Through this process, the -
panel of judges was able to
choose top quality entrants
and eliminate work more
appropriate in folk art or craft
shows. Because of this, ISO
artists competed in 1976.
"That's what we wanted,"
Mrs. Taylor said. "A lot of
artists don't like to judge an
outdoor show because the
work is not juried beforehand.
When a show is juried
beforehand, all of the art has
merit and the competition is
keener."
Mrs. Taylor is confident
that this system will catch on.
"I am not worried about the
reduced number of entrants in
last year's show. The number
of exhibiting artists will grow
according to quality."
The Boardwalk Show has
become a major fund-raiser
for the Cultural Arts Center,
whose directors, along with
thecityof Ocean City, sponsor
the show.
A 2C percent commission is
included in the price of each
painting sold at the show.
'This is less than the standard
• sales commission
admiration of true art patrons. The sculptress is
for the admiration of the spectators. The scene:
the Annual Ocean City Boardwalk Art Show.
charged by must galleries,"
Mrs. Taylor noted.
Winning entries from past
shows comprise the permanent
collection of the Arts
Center. Among them are Iris
Award, presented to such
prestigious artists as Andrew
Wye'th. Morris Blackburn. -
Ben Shahn and Al Capp *
It was discontinued, Mrs.
Taylor explains, "possibly
because the art show was then
still a one day affair and the
judging of awards alone
began to require all- of the
time we had."
In 1974 the show was expanded
to two days. "We
found we needed more time."
Mrs. Taylor said. "As the
number of participants increased,
one day was was not
enough time for the judges to
review the work and make a
decision."
Mrs. Taylor is able to speak
from an artist's point of view
since, in the years before she
was director of the Arts
Center, she was a contestant
in the show.
"As an artist. I found things
unsatisfactory. This is not a"
criticism, the show had to
work itself out. The show was
exhausting for everyone when
it was just one day. My family
and I traveled down and spent
all that money for accommodations
for one day. In
making it two days, it took the
pressure off the artists and
the Arts Center. And it gives
artists the opportunity to see
the winning works before they
have to leave."
The Boardwalk Art Show
has enjoyed a wealth of gifted
artists who lent their keen
aesthetic eyes to the judging
of the show.
Among others, they included
an illustrator for the
Philadelphia Evening
Bulletin, professors of art
from Glassboro State College,
and respected artists from
Philadelphia and New York.
They, as well as the directors
of the show are responsible
for the consistent high quality
among the winning works and
the move to .upgrade the
overall standards of the show.
Even the registration
procedures have been
streamlined. In the early
,7
recalled. "The neighbors
were complaining It was a •
moss. Now. pre-registration'is.
held at the corner of each
boardwalk block." . -
A now feature of the show,
begun last year, and introduced
by Mrs. Taylor, is a
$500 scholarship awarded to
an art student whose work the
judges feel qualifies that
student for financial aid.
"This is not done by most
art shows," Mrs. Taylor said.
"We knew it would upgrade
the quality of the amateur
category by attracting art
students."
William Jeavons, cochairman
of the show,
stressed that any changes <
made in the format of the
show are made to improve it.
"The quality of the show
was going down" he said. "It
was turning into a comic
strip. But the quality of last
year's show was much better.
Now we have to build up the
number of participants."
Jeavons believes this will be
a fairly easy task. Artists are
already calling for information
on the August
show. "For the last three
months, we've been getting
calls for applications and
information."
More changes are expected
as the art show takes hold
under its new format and as a
result of the recent
reorganization of the Arts«, '
Center's board of directors.
"I imagine if it's going to
remain viable, the show will
have to keep evolving," Mr.
Jeavons said. "And I imagine
the kinds of work submitted
will change as the years pass, -
too."
The Arts Center staff and
Boardwalk Art Show committee
are gearing up for the
August 5 and 6.1977 show. It's
come a long way since the .
innovative Dr. Smith donated
$300 and the seed of an idea.
As Mrs. Frances Taylor
what the future of the
Boardwalk Art Show is. and
you can almost see her brain
somersaulting with idea* and
plans. But. she will modsj&lyt
reply, "We are looking .for- ,
