, Collecting seashells if or fun,
hobby and profit is a popular
pastttme and advocation on
the beach in Ocean City.
Amateur, 'scientific and
professional shell collectors
roam the sands of Oceafi City
seeking out the simple as well
as the exotic shell for their
individual collections.
Shell collecting has been, a
fascinating diversion since
before 6000 B.C., so the casual
beachcomber today is doing
what comes naturally since
that time.
Shells were big business in
the early Roman times as a
source of the purple dye which
was indicative of the
statesmen and royalty who
were the sole wearers of thecolor.
Hunting shells is also big
business. There is the story
about the southern resort city
: that ordered truckloads of
shells scooped up from a
neighboring beach so that the
people visiting the resort
could have the excitement of
finding shells of note on its
beach.
Each beach supports different
species of shells. If you
are looking for conch shells,
you have to find the beach
where they live. Ocean City
has a variety of shell species.
The shell is made by the sea
animal that lives in the shell.
The animal must be able to
.shells, walk on thesea bottom,
burrow in the sand, float the
food in the water and then
feed on it.
Shell collecting has become
so popular in some areas of
the world'that restrictions
havejiad to be placed on their
taking. They are protected as
a matter of conservation, just
as some land animals are
protected by hunter quotas. '
Shell collecting is fun, and
Ocean City is the fun place for
shell collectors.
Pear Blossom fete
a Realtors 1 event
Washington, D.C.. has its
Peach Blossom Festival, and
the day may not be too far
distant when Ocean City will
have its Pear Blossom
Festival.
The Ocean City Board of
Realtors is engaged in a treeplanting
project designed to
create tree-lined streets
throughout the city.
Acting on the advice of
agricultural experts, the
Realtors have decided that
the Bradford Pear Tree is
best suited for the sandy soil
and seashore climate of
Ocean City.
The Realtors have been
planting one of the trees on
the property of every new
home that they sell. They
have also offered the trees for
sale at minimal cost to any
property owner who wishes to
participate in the project.
Each Spring, the Bradford
Pear Tree blossoms with
masses of white flowers.
Eventually, Ocean City will
have its Pear Blossom
Festival.

Older Americans Act of 1965
enables SO people in Cape May
County to receive two meals
daily. The' funds are appropriated
through the county
Office on Aging. To qualify, a
person must be age 60 or
above, live in the county of
Cape May, be home-bound
and not be able to shop for
food' or prepare meals for
themselves. . There are no
income limits or
requirements to be eligible for.
the Mobile Meals program.
The daily fee for the food is -
adjusted to the individuals
ability to pay up to $2 day but
no one. will be excluded
because of inability to pay.
Each day at the Vo-Tech
center, the appropriate
number of meals are
prepared. Students in the
foods program assist in the
preparation and packaging of
the food; therefore the
program has created another
learning experience for
students in the food services
course at Vo-Tech.
. Two meals are delivered to
each home, one hot meal one
cold. All food is delivered in
disposable containers.

Seniors care for
their own here
in
Senior . Volunteers
throughout Cape May County
are busily knitting,
crocheting, sewing and
assembling items which will
be donated to various rionprofjt
or charitable
organizations'.
Working individually and in
groups, Sefhior Volunteers,
persons over 60 who are
registered with RSVP - the
Retired Senior Volunteer
Program of Cape May County
- devote' many hours each
month to knit or crochet
slippers, lap robes, socks,
teddy bears, afghans, plant
hangers-, caps, hats and
numerous other items.
Senior Volunteers also use •
various other materials to
create a wide variety of
items, including waste
baskets, dolls, .decoration,
Christmas Tree ornaments,
bingo marker holders and
other gadgets for use around
the home.
Donating the finished items
to' -benefit various
organizations is never a
problem, according to County
RSVP Director, Jeremy B.
Clark.' 'We are never short on
ideas of what can be made,
how to make things, or who to
donate them to, but are often
short on raw materials."
Clark says that often Senior
Volunteers have spent their
own limited funds to buy yarn
or other materials so that they,
could continue to work.
RSVP is forbidden to use
money which comes from its
ACTION grant to purchase
raw- materials. Such
materials must either be
donated or .purchased with
monies raised independently..
•Recently Senior Volunteers
have benefit ted from a
donation, an auction and i
fund raising effort.
•The Victorian Cape May
AARP Chapter • gave a
generous yarn donation to
RSVP. This material will be
used by the Cape May RSVP •
Social Service Group which
meets each- Friday at the
Victorian Towers.
During the past year this
group of some 18 to 20 Senior
Volunteers has donated 245
pairs of bed socks, 175- lap
robes, 75 shoulderettes, and
an assortment of hats, toys
. and teddy bears to the
Woodbine State School; Crest
Haven; New Jersey Memorial
Home, Vineland; South Cape
Nursing Home; East Creek
Manor, and Swainton Nursing
Center.
The Senior Volunteer Social
Service Group which meets at
the Millman Center makes
similar items which are sold
to benefit programs at the
Center. Additionally the
Millman group has donated
• various handmade items to
the Association for Retarded
Citizens Boardwalk Bazaar
and to Crest Haven. *
RSVP was able to help out
New' Jersey Public Television
and to purchase yarn at a
discount price when the RSVP
bid for a yarn gift certificate
. was accepted during the
recent NJPTV on-the-air
auction.
HORSESHOE PITCHING
Horseshoe pitching is a
game of farmyard origin, but
that's not reason why we can't
pitch horseshoes here at the.
shore. And we do. Horseshoe
pitching courts are set up at
the Recreation Center for
daily play during the summer
months. Late in August,
the City Recreation Department
stages a horseshoe
pitching contest for residents
and visitors. Information on
the contest is available from
City Halli the' Recreation
Center or the Boardwalk

"RSVP is designed to get
senior citizens involved in
meaningful volunteer work
and to benefit non-proft
organizations," Clark says.
"When" I saw the chance to bid
on the yarn during the auc-
• tion, and thus to help us as
well as public television. I
jumped at the chance.. TV got
the money. Senior Volunteers
will get the yarn, and various
organizations will get the
finished products."
During the BicenBash,
RSVP Volunteers manned a
booth which sold various
items they had made.
Proceeds from this sale are
being used to purchase yarn.
Frequently volunteers will'
purchase yarn on sale when
they are travelling. All are
constantly on the lookout for
salej or donations. - •
In addition to working in
groups, Senior Volunteers
perform regular work at
va rious agencies,
organizations and institutions
in the County.
Senior Volunteers serve, at
Burdette Tomiin Hospital.
Crest Haven, in various
schools.- throughout the
county, the Social Service
Building, Rip Grande, the
Association for Retarded
Citizens, and elsewhere.
Now two years old in Cape
May County, the RSVP here is
one Qf some 700 such
programs nationwide. All are
funded partially by the
federal volunteer agency,
ACTION.
Locally, RSVP receives
partial funding from the
Board of Freeholders. Senior
Volunteers may be reimbursed
for their meal and
mileage expenses while they
_ are serving. AU are covered
' by accident insurance. RSVP,.
which now enrolls close to 200
Senior Volunteers; is constantly
looking for additional
volunteers to serve in a
variety-of positions as well as
for projects for- Senior
Volunteers to undertake.

Center,. Crest Haven Road
and the Parkway, Cape May
Court House.

Off-season
Some resorts take in the sidewalks when the visitors leave after labor
Day but not Ocean City. This is a busy year-around seaside community
of about 13,000 souls. Visitors here in the off-season find Ocean City a
pleasant place to visit. Many return eventually to live year round Here
