Bicentennial done!
Centennial coming
The bicentennial year may
officially be over, but the
Ocean City Bicentennial
Committee lives on and will
continue to do so for some
time to come.
Though the work of the
bicentennial is over, the
Committee will now direct its
attention to Ocean City's 100th
birthday in 1979.
The action was taken formally
by the City Commission
in the form of a proclamation
issued by Mayor B. Thomas
Waldman.
' The proclamation notes that
the Bicentennial Committee
"served the community with
great distinction" during the
past year.
It said further that with
Ocean City's centennial less
than two years away an
energetic group is needed to
coordinate the many events
and activities planned for that
anniversary.
The Centennial Committee
for Ocean City is expected to
reorganize in the near future.

-walk is destined to hang on a
den or living room wall of
some home somewhere. We •
• hasten to explain.
How would you like a piece
of the Ocean City'boardwalk,
as a wall plaque in your
'home? It's easy. Just .do
something for the good of the
community.
The award is made by the
City Public Relations Office.
It is actually a recycled piece
of boardwalk planking.
The boardwalk planks are
subject to considerable wear
by the millions of footsteps of
strollers during the year. The
worn planks are replaced with
new planks.
That's where the PR Office
steps in. Instead of dumping
the replaced planks, they are
cut into 15-inch chunks, appropriate
legend is placed on
the piece, and the entire item
is lacquered.
A "Piece of the 'Walk" is
presented to dignitaries and
promoters, producers and
participants in some entertaining
or public service
event.
The plaques are unique and
nowhere else on the Jersey
shore are they given out.

Ocean City is Jersey surf-rider rendezvous
Surfing may have hart its
origins in the breakers long
Hawaiian beaches, bat'here
Stateside* it has found "enthusiastic
adoption in the
transition of. the .sport to the
east and west coasts..
And on.e of the hottest A
surfing spots on the east coast*
is right here in Ocean City,
New Jersey. The first sound of
the cry "surf's up" was heard
on the Ocean City beach back
around 1964. Since that time
surfing has grown to a major,
rear-around sport here in
Ocean City, with an estimated .
50.000 board men and women
riding the local waves each
year, January through
December.
The potential for the sport
was not 1 recognized in Ocean
City until about 15 years ago
when a few local beachoriented
youths experimented
with the sport here. Some ofi
the young originators had
sampled the waves in other
older surfing spas.
Of course there was, the
usual friction between surf
riders and surf bathers. The
surfers were shunted to offbeat
beaches where surf
bathers were forbidden in the
water because of the fact that
lifeguards were not stationed
at those particular points on
the strand.
Then in 1964 a group of local
businessmen saw the
potential of surf boarding as a
new attraction in Ocean City
- and they set about organizing
the sport. The Ocean City
Surfing Association was
organized and joined efforts
with the City Recreation
' Department to promote the
sport here' in America's
Greatest Family Report .

Association, but interest in
the thrilling water sport
figuratively exploded and.the
program grew until today
there «re seven organized
contests a year and an entire
block of beachfront is
reserved for surfers only.-
The season never really
begins nor ends. The surfers
areon the waves even during
the bitter cold of winter.

Jersey turkey experimental-bird
The Southern New Jersey
airways js on the migatory
route of a number of game
birds, and in the passing a few
do wind up on the dinner table
of Ocean City sportsmen
gunners.
The menu has been
enhanced by the New Jersey
Division of Fish, Game and
Shellflsherles which this fall
released flocks of wild
turkeys in an effort to restore
that species of game-food fowl
in the wilds of rural New
Jersey.
Due to the nature of the food
available, it is not expected
that the turkey will crowd the
ducks and brants which flock
in large numbers to the
marshlands in South Jersey
around Ocean City, but it is
only a matter of a few miles
and a few minutes to the South

Jersey farmlands which will
certainly be attractive to the
big birds.
The wild turkeys were
obtained from the Vermont
Fish and Game Department
through the cooperation of
Vermont Governor Thomas
P. Salmon and department
Director Edward F. Kehoe.
The attempt to bring the
wild turkey back to New
Jersey is part of a concerted
northeastern wild turkey
restoration program and
involves the cooperation of
state wildlife biologists from
Pennsylvania and Vermont.
Pennsylvania Game Commission

wildlife researchers in a
background - study that
disclosed that this state does
have some 2,000 square miles
of potential turkey habitat.
The initial phase of the
program calls for establishment
of a population of wild
turkeys in the 500 square
miles of habitat in northern
New Jersey since it is the
higher quality habitat.
. In the future, providing the
program succeeds in North
Jersey and favorable
population densities are
reached, the division will livecapture
turkeys from the
established flocks and
transplant them to suitable

state.
Some 1,500 square miles of
turkey range of a lesser
quality exist in the southern
piney woods and pine barrens.
The large extent of the area
gives promise that it could
support a sizeable turkey
population.
The current turkey
restoration program inoludes
only live-trapped birds of a
positive wild stock. Efforts in
the past, by the State as well
as by private groups and
individuals, had been made
with pen-raised birds which
failed because they could not
adapt to living in the wild.
Under fish and game laws it
is illegal for anyone to release
turkeys in New Jersey
without prior, written permission
from the division.
The turkeys liberated in the
program are being tagged
and marked with colored wing
streamers for field identification.
Any person who
sees a marked turkey should
report the location and date of
' the sighting to the New Jersey
Division of Fish, Game, and
Shellfisheries, P. O. Box 1809,

Easteftime. It continues
through five separate contests
which are staged weekly,
through the summer and fall
months, and the Turkey Trot
at Thanksgiving is the last
activity of the year booked by" 1
the Association.
While all" the surfers
compete for the awards offered
in the seven organized
contests, free-surfing is going
on all the, time at the
designated surfing beach at
6uYst. Every day throughout
the year surfers are on the
waves, there whenever they
can find the time from their
school or working hours.
Novitiates in the sport are
encouraged by the novice
contests the Surfing
Association stages throughout
the summer. The novice
meets are restricted to those
surfers only who have not won
prizes in any of the other
seven organized contests. It
is in the novice contests where
the new surfers gain the skills
and confidence needed to
compete.
The city government,
through the Recreation
Department, hires two
lifeguards who patrol the
surfing beach during the
summer, months. Experienced
surfers themselves,
they double as instructors and
several days a week conduct
classes to show new, young
and aspiring surfers how it is
done.
Originated in Hawaii about
300 years ago, board surfing is
a natural' sport at the
seashore. The art of catching
the waves just right and the
knack of balancing on a board
going 15 to 20 miles an hour,
makes for a challenging and
exciting experience. Age is no
barrier, it's a matter of
practice and nerve.
