Lifeguards:
History was made on, two
paints by the Ocean City
Beach Patrol in 1976. It was
the championship life&aving
force on the Jersey shore, and
it went coed .- » ' • v
Although she didn't contribute
directly to the Patrol's
championship efforts, pretty
18-year-old Judy Lichtner, of
Churchville, ' Pa., made
iUstory by being the first
^female ever to win a position
on the Beach Patrol.
The Beach Patrol positions
•reopen to female applicants.
However, to get a position on
the Patrol the young ladymust
successfully complete
the required tests in lifeboat
rowing, surf swimming, first
aid and other demands on a
lifeguard at a busy summer
seaside resort.
The Ocean City Beach
Patrol athletes made a clean
sweep of the lifeguard
competitions last summer.
The Patrol's swimmers and
oarsmen successfully
defended their title in the
South Jersey Lifeguard
Championships. The local
athletes proved to be the best
The OCBP picked up extra
laurels in other competitions
in 1976. Its athletes won the
.prestigious ^Margate.
Memorial Lifeguard Races.,
and repeated its perennial
role as pool swimming
champions in the annual
Lifeguards tank competition.
Added to this was the Around
Absecon Island rowing
championship, an endurance
feat in which lifeguard twoman
crews row a lifeboat
completely around the island
on which is located Longport,
Margate. Ventnor and
Atlantic City.
It was a championship year
all around for the Ocean City
Beach Patrol. It was also a
woman's lib season when the
men-only tradition was
broken and a woman was put
to work protecting lives on the
Ocean City bathing beach.
But the season competition
is only an extracurricular
activity for the Ocean City
lifeguards. Their prime
purpose is protecting lives on
the Ocean City bathing beach,
and the low rate of drownings
here over the years indicates
they do their job well.
The Ocean City Beach
Patro has a roster of 110
five medics and an ambulance
Positions on the Beach
wish to return to the force
each summer naturally get
chose not to return and
tryouts are held each spring
for aspirants for the vacancies.
Thar she blows!
The cry of the whaler is not
to be heard from the Ocean
City beach, but. on occasion
one of the behmoths of the
deep visit America's Fines;
Family Resort.
There was a whale sighting
here last summer. The lajge
sea visitor nuzzled the jbeach
here at'North st. early in the
morning, and he was- the
source of considerable interest
and fun for lifeguards,
whale experts and plain
spectators.
The mammouth animal
splashed around in the surf
for several hours before
finally heading out to sea.
However, shortly after noon
he was back again swimming
in the same area of the surf.
The concern of local whale
lovers is the whale's safety.
Left unattended the big fish
just might wind up high and
dry on the beach. For his own
safety, lifeguards and sailors
of surf boats try to maneuver
between the whale and the
shallow surf. Our visitor last
summer played around for
several hours before heeding
the admonition of his sdf-
EXTRA BENEFITS—Calesthenics is a must for good physical
the Ocean City beach. Here a lovely instructress leads an exercise class
which is held at various locations along the beach each week during the
GEOGRAPHY
Ocean City occupies the
extreme northern end of New
Jersey's southernmost county
- Cape May - a peninsula
which juts out to a point into
Delaware Bay. Cape May
County was established as a
county more than 200 years
ago, but most of its growth
has occurred in the last half /
century.
was at least 25 feet long, and
in his wake he left the experts
on the beach arguing whether
he was either a finback or a
humpback whale. Fin whales
are often seen in Jersey
waters, but if it was a humpback
it was a rare sighting.
Whale sighting now has
become another attraction
among the many offered on
the beach in Ocean City.
Playgrounds -
Something for all ages
Approximately 100,000 boys
and girls, men and women, of
all ages enjoy an expansive
system of public playgrounds
under the direction of the
Ocean City Department of
Recreation.
The hub of the system is the
sprawling Recreation Center
on the beachfront between 5th
and 6th sts. Neighborhood
playgrounds are interspersed
all the way from North st at
the upper end of the island to
the 58th st. beach at the other
extreme.
Swings, seesaws, merry-gorounds,
checkers, basketweaving
and numerous other
activities and games, all
administered by a staff of
professional youth supervisors,
insures them a full
safe day.
For the youth of the community,
who have outgrown
the playground delights, there
are modern concrete
basketball courts, a soccer
field and softball diamond
- maintained for their fun.
For the adults, who shy
away from the more
strenuous sports, there is a
battery of well-equipped
shuffleboard courts right off
the boardwalk.
To supplement the
Recreation Center's program,
the department sponsors
softball leagues for men and
baseball sessions for younger
boys. These activites are
conducted daily at the Bay av.
ballfield on the bayfront
between 5th and 6th sts.
Also for high school and
college boys, the city conducts
a highly competitive
basketball league under
floodlights every weekday
evening during July and
August on the Recreation
. Center's concrete courts.
The tennis courts nearby
are for public use at a nominal
fee. One of the features of the
net season is the annual
Atlantic Coast Junior Tennis
tournament conducted here.
As large and as fully
equipped as it is, the
Recreation Center is not the
only playground in the City.
Four other equipped
playgrounds are open, and
two others are in the process
of being developed.
Neighboring playgrounds
are located at North st. and
Haven av.; at 8th st. and
Haven av.; at 15th st. and Bay
av., and at 34th st. and Asbury
av. In the development stage
is a recreation center at 18th
st. and Haven av., which will
cover a full city block, and
another at 52nd st. and Asbury
av.
At present the city maintains
swings and other
playground facilities on the
beach at 58th st. for South
Ocean City youngsters.
Footrace at Recreation Center
The close of the summer
season does not mean the
closing of playgrounds. Play
areas for smaller children are
closed during the school
months, but other facilities of
the playground system are
continued on a year-round Three-legged race
Shelter for time out of the sun
basis.
The grass oval at the
Recreation Center, for instance,
is used for home
games of the high school
football team and also for
high school track meets.
During the colder months,
' the concrete basketball courts
at the Center are flooded and
when the water freezes the
courts become a rink for the
ice ska ting by young and older
winter sports enthusiasts.
Coming from the south?
use Cape-Lewes ferry
There are a number of ways
to reach metropolitan areas to
the south, but the most convenient
and scenic route is via
the Cape May-Lewes ferry.
Three new ferry vessels ply
the route across Delaware
Bay. south to Lewes,
Delaware, and back.
The only ferry service in
operation in the. greater
Delaware Valley area, the
Cape May-Lewes Ferry links
the ocean resorts of New
