Cape May County.
,. Cape . May County Civil
Defense officials are working
with their counterparts in
Virginia. Maryland and
Delaware to perfect a coastal
storm early warning system.
Under the plan, seashore
communities from Norfolk,
Va., to the south to Asbury
Park, N.J.. to the north arc
devising a warning system by-.
- which one community-could
give to neighboring communities
advice on what to
expect on- predicted high
tides: . .
Because tides run from
'south.to north, a high tide in
Cape May County wouldn't
reach flood stage in neighboring
Atlantic ' County for
about one hour and. it would,
take four to five hours to'
reach Ocean County.
Using indicators in the back
bay area, CD. officials can
determine how high- the tide
will go and alert the other
counties through a network of
ham radio ' operators who-,
transmit on a designated '
•frequency other than .-that
used for emergency purposes.
In this way officials in other
counties can plan better and
know what they are faced
' with.
Unfortunately the current
network exists only in New
Jersey and' thus Cape May
County, being at the southern
end. must be hit first before
the strength of th'e flooding
. Karen Kibblehouse and mute friend in pantomine
of the 60's. '
tide can be measured and a
warning issued,,o.1.l/, ,-....,
Cape officials are now
negotiating- with officials, in
Sussex County, Del., Ocean
City, Md'., and Accomack
County, Va., in an effort to
entice them to join the net :
work. ' . •
. The Virginia checkpoint
could give officials here as
mijch as two to three hours to
prepare for an unusually high •
tide. ' ...
If these other communities
join the network it will be up
to them to find still more
checkpoints to their south to
help give them advance
warning.
The Cape May County Civil
Defense unit also has a storm
.alert device that enables
officials to be aware of severe'
thunderstorms up to 100 miles
away. .
• The new device will help
resort communities alert
lifeguards during the summer
to clear the beaches well in
advance of an impending
electrical storm.
FINEST IN WORLD .
A great many people
consider New Jersey's white
sandy beaches the finest in
the world. This is evidenced
by the fact that the resort
areas are credited with
generating one and one-half
billion dollars in. business,
years.
Cape May
Diamond
a pretty
sand gem
A Cape ' May Diamond?
What is it? This is the reaction
of many people not familiar
with the famous Ocean City
beach stone.
First of all, for those who do
not know what a Cape May
Diamond is... it is a
semiprecious gem. Yes, that
is what it is designated.'
One would never recognize
it as a gem in its natural state .
but it is found on the beaches
of Cape May County. It looks
just like an ordinary beach
stone but when cut and'
polished it rivals real
diamonds.
Local beachcombers and
knowledgeable residents have
found a number of Cape May
Diamonds along the Ocean
City beach. Usually found at
the water's edge, there is a
method by which to determine
whether it is a Cape May
Diamond or just a shiney
pebble on the beach.
Hold some surf water in the
palm of the hand. Place the
stone in the small pool of
water and slosh it around
slightly. If it looks like glass,
you have a Cape May
Diamond. . '
The stones are usually sent
to Germany for cutting and
'polishing however, recently
people have been sending
them to Hong Kong. There
they were cut and polished
then returned to the shipper.
It takes about eight weeks to
have the finished object
returned:
Arrangements are being
made to have the Cape May
Diamond put in the
Smithsonian Institution, in
Washington, D.C.
Amateur, scientific and
professional shell collectors
roam the sands of Ocean City
seeking out the simple as well
as the exotic shell for their
individual collections.
Shell collecting has been a
fascinating diversion since
before6000 B.C., so the casual
beachcomber today is doing
what comes naturally since
that time.
Shells were big business in
the early Roman times as a
source of the purple dye which
was indicative of the
statesmen and\ royalty.who
were the sole wearers oi the
color.
Hunting shells is also big
business. There is the story
about the southern resort city
that ordered truckloads of
shells scooped up from a
neighboring beach so that the
people visiting^ the resort
could have the excitement of
LODGE QUEEN-.The Artisan
Order for Mutual Protection holds
an outing in Ocean City each
summer, and one of the highlights of
the outing is the selection of a beauty
queen to reign over the activities.
Here Queen Melanie Garutti holds
still while her predecessor. Roselyn
Henderson, places the diadem on
her tresses.
Beauties by the sea
What would a seashore paradise be without angels ?.
We have them here in Ocean City. We call them beauty
queens. Usually every major event has its queen,
thus the abundance of lovelies. Here are some.
fc aliens oi .note on its
beach.
Each beach supports different
species of shells. If you
are looking for conch shells,
you have to find the beach
where they live. Ocean City
has a variety of shell species.
The shell is made by the sea
animal that lives in the shell.
The animal must be able to
feed upon the food of the area.
The animals come out of their
shells, walk on the sea bottom,
burrow in the sand, float
the food in the water and then
feed on it.
Shell collecting has become
so popular in some areas of
the world that restrictions
have had to be placed on their
taking. They are protected as
a matter of conservation, just
as some land animals are
protected by hunter quotas.
Shell collecting is fun. and
Ocean City is the fun place for
shell collectors.
