Civic organizations
keep eye on things
Many people who maintain
their winter residence in the
• metropolitan areas from New
York; through Philadelphia
and down to Washington. D.C.
havesummer homes in Ocean
City. -. ..' :
These folks are Ocean City
taxpayers' and therefore are
interested • in the administration
of the Ocean City
government. During the
summer months, these
segments of the population
are represented by neighborhood
groups, which keep
an interest in the local tax
picture and the operations of
the public facilities.
The South Ocean City
Improvement Association
comprising residents in the
area from 42nd to 59th sts. is
the oldest of these neighborhood
groups. The
Association during the
summer conducts regular
meetings and periodic social
events in a community hall at
53th st.
The big event of the year for
the South Ocean City group is
the July 4th celebration. This
features a decorated bicycle
parade and competitive
games among youngsters on
the beach. These are in addition
to frequent dances and
parties for members and their
'children. . * ' .
The 16-34 Community.
Association as its name implies,
is active from 16th to
34th sts. This organizationwas,
instituted a number of
years ago for the purpose of
improving zoning regulations
on the oceanfront. Its social
and civic outlets proved so
popular with its members, it
has continued its existence
and has become an important
voice in the community affairs.
The Gardens Civic
Association is made up of
property owners from Battersea
rd! north to the inlet.
This group has been successful
in working for beach
improvement programs and
the revision of zoning and
building regulations in the
neighborhood.
The Midway Civic
Association is the newest of
these neighborhood
organizations. Organized in
the past few years,' the
Midway Association
represents the taxpayers in
the center-city area and is
active the year-around in
civic and governmental affairs.
quarters in the Information
Center, has installed an
automatic dialing system
which proves of considerable
assistance to visitors seeking
information on local business
operations and public
facilities.
The instrument provides a
direct telephone line to 400
Ocean City business places
without the 'necessity of
manual dialing by the visitor.
The telephone numbers of the
subscribing business places
are pre-recorded on sensitized
tape.
The numbers are coded
with an advertising display at
the Center which allows the
visitor to call the hotel, motel,
restaurant or other subscribing
business place in a
matter of seconds with the
simple operation of pushing a
seaside bike path
' Boardwalk bicycling is one
of the more popular activities
at this family seashore resort.
City officials, naturally, are
concerned about both the bike
rider and the pedestrian using
the boardwalk at the same
time. The City Commissioners
instituted a
comprehensive safety
program on the boardwalk
last Spring.
During the summer season,
bicycles are supposed to be off
the boardwalk by 10:30 in the
morning. Many avid cyclists
pedal the boards starting at
sunrise about 5 a.m. and
continuing until the "off"
time is sounded from loudspeakers
aloog the walk.
During the off-season,
however, bike riding on the
boardwalk is permitted at any
time of the day. The bike
riders and pedestrians are
given certain sections of the
boardwalk for their favorite
activites, cycling or strolling.
A yellow line is drawn down
the center of the boardwalk.
Cyclists may pedal their bikes
down either side of this line.
Each section is bordered on
the outside by a white line
over which cyclists are not to
cross. This area at boths sides
of the 'walk are for strollers.
And cyclists are to go in one
direction in either of the
bicycle lanes.
Along the center line are
signs cautioning bicyclists to
keep a reasonable speed and
refrain from weaving in and
out around other cyclists.
The system is designed for
safety and the cooperation of
everyone is solicited.
Whale rending racks on the beach
The Ocean City beach at one
time jn early history was
quite prominent in the oldtime
whaling industry.
Early settlers in the area
put up "rending racks" at
various points along the
, beach. The whalers playing
the North Atlantic would
bring their catch to Peck's
Beach.
Workers would rend the
blubber and drain the oil. The
product of their labors was
then put in containers and
hauled to the market in the
nearby Philadelphia area.
Whales have been sighted in
the waters off the Ocean City
beach down through the
years- However, these are
usually mavericks separated
from their herd, which
prefers the cooler waters of
the North Atlantic.
Healthy Climate
Ocean City has an ideal,
invigorating climate which is
conducive to sustained health
and long life.
This is an official opinion of
the United States Weather
Service.
The Service further says
that the climate shows a good
average hourly wind circulation
or movement, and
that the air is greatly free
from dust or soot particles.
There is plenty of sunshine
and during the summer
months the area is practically
free from excessive high
temperatures, and during the
winter the climate is milder
than even the nearby inland
cities.
Because we are situated on
the edge of the Atlantic
Ocean, our climate is cooler in
the summer and warmer in
the winter. The salt atmosphere,
plus the influence
of the Gulf Stream'not far off
the beach, combine to temper
the extremes of temperatures
that are usually found a short
distance inland.
According to the Weather
Service, temperatures of 90
degrees during the summer
are a rarity, and never
sustained over two or three
days at the seashore.
Meanwhile searing heat often
is prolonged only 65 miles
away in Philadelphia and in
other nearby metropolitan
areas. Bureau records show
an average of only three 90degree
days readings a year
in Ocean City, compared to 20
to 25 such days inland.
The Service also reports
that in Ocean City the sun
shines an average of 60
percent of the daylight hours.
