So what exactly is academic<br />

<strong>pressure</strong>?<br />

The <strong>pressure</strong> a student receives<br />

from family or society that causes<br />

stress over school and future<br />

success. This can cause students to<br />

focus on school too much, which can<br />

lead to severe problems.


Where does this <strong>pressure</strong> to<br />

succeed come from?<br />

Authoritarian Parents<br />

• Expect their child to<br />

succeed<br />

• Very demading<br />

• Encourage effort<br />

Family Background<br />

• Many families partiularliy from Asia tend<br />

to value academics.<br />

• Grades are seen as the most important<br />

part of life.<br />

• Wealty families expect more from their<br />

children.<br />

A Changing World<br />

• More competition in the job market<br />

• Desire for money and a better life<br />

• The desire to get into a good college<br />

• Staying ahead of classmates in terms of<br />

GPA

cope with academic stress<br />

Many schools have programs with consolers<br />

set up to help studnets with academic needs.<br />

This is not just for students who are behind<br />

in their work, but for kids who are<br />

overextended and need help budgeting<br />

their time.<br />

explain to them that the<br />

<strong>pressure</strong> is getting to you<br />

and that a change in<br />

lifestyle is needed.<br />

find pleasant<br />
