LITURGY OF THE WORD
Jesus’ words “This is my body” and
“This cup is the new covenant in my
blood” were only part of his table
blessing. He also said, twice, “Do this
in remembrance of me.” Like the five
thousand hungry souls in today’s
Gospel, we are fed by our Lord, but
this is food that lasts and changes us.
It is intended to be shared the way
that Melchizedek shared bread and
wine with Abram. Let us listen now
for God’s voice, urging us to share
our lives as Jesus did.

lessed John Paul II reminded us that in
commemorating the Solemnity of the Most
Holy Body and Blood of Christ, the Church “does
not only celebrate the Eucharist but solemnly bears
it in procession, publicly proclaiming that the
sacrifice of Christ is for the salvation of the whole
world.” We rejoice in this post Easter expression of
our Eucharistic affection in order to deepen our
attachment to the unique and unending Event that
transforms our lives. As the Sequence for Corpus
Christi begs; “Jesu, of your love befriend us,/Your
eternal goodness send us/In the land of life to see.”
Gardening for Joy
In his last manuscript, "The Dispersion of
Seeds," Henry David Thoreau says, "As I
went by a pitch-pine wood the other day,
I saw a few little ones springing up in the
pasture from these seeds which had been
blown from the wood. In a few years, if not disturbed,
these seedlings will alter the face of Nature here."
Thoreau was very much aware of the immense
possibility contained in things so small that we can
hold hundreds in the palm of our hand. While not every
plant we handle comes from seed, they all start out
small, no matter how we propagate them. And while
some might grow into large trees, the greatness of
others will be in the happiness and joy that they will
bring to those who see their flowers or eat their
produce. How wonderful to be a gardener - for our own
and others' delight!
