Blair, stated <strong>the</strong> case before him, and received <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g letter, directed to<br />
<strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g’s attorney <strong>in</strong> Spotsylvania<br />
“SIR, — I lately received a letter, signed by a good number <strong>of</strong> worthy<br />
gentlemen, who are not here, compla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong><strong>Baptist</strong>s</strong>; <strong>the</strong><br />
particulars <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir misbehavior are not told, any fur<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to private houses and mak<strong>in</strong>g dissensions. Mr. Craig and Mr.<br />
Benjam<strong>in</strong> Waller are now with me and deny <strong>the</strong> charge; <strong>the</strong>y tell me<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are will<strong>in</strong>g to take <strong>the</strong> oaths as o<strong>the</strong>rs have; I told <strong>the</strong>m I had<br />
consulted <strong>the</strong> attorney-general, who is <strong>of</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ion that <strong>the</strong> general court<br />
only have a right to grant licenses, and <strong>the</strong>refore I referred <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong><br />
court; but, on <strong>the</strong>ir application to <strong>the</strong> attorney-general, <strong>the</strong>y brought me<br />
his letter, advis<strong>in</strong>g me to write to you. That <strong>the</strong>ir petition was a matter<br />
<strong>of</strong> right, and that you may not molest <strong>the</strong>se conscientious people so<br />
long as <strong>the</strong>y behave <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong> a manner becom<strong>in</strong>g pious Christians<br />
and <strong>in</strong> obedience to <strong>the</strong> laws till <strong>the</strong> court, when <strong>the</strong>y <strong>in</strong>tend to apply<br />
for license, and when <strong>the</strong> gentlemen who compla<strong>in</strong> may make <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
objections and be heard. The act <strong>of</strong> toleration (it be<strong>in</strong>g found by<br />
experience that persecut<strong>in</strong>g dissenters <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>the</strong>ir numbers) has<br />
given <strong>the</strong>m a right to apply, <strong>in</strong> a proper manner, for licensed houses for<br />
<strong>the</strong> worship <strong>of</strong> God, accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>ir consciences; and I persuade<br />
myself that <strong>the</strong> gentlemen will quietly overlook <strong>the</strong>ir meet<strong>in</strong>gs till <strong>the</strong><br />
court. I am told <strong>the</strong>y adm<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>the</strong> sacrament <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord’s supper,<br />
near <strong>the</strong> manner we do, and differ from our church <strong>in</strong> noth<strong>in</strong>g but <strong>in</strong><br />
that <strong>of</strong> baptism, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir renew<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ancient discipl<strong>in</strong>e; by which<br />
<strong>the</strong>y have reformed some s<strong>in</strong>ners and brought <strong>the</strong>m to be truly penitent.<br />
Nay, if a man <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>irs is idle and neglects to labor and provide for his<br />
family as he ought, he <strong>in</strong>curs <strong>the</strong>ir censures, which have had good<br />
effects. If this be <strong>the</strong>ir behavior, it were to be wished we had more <strong>of</strong> it<br />
among us. But at least, I hope all may rema<strong>in</strong> quiet till <strong>the</strong> court.<br />
“I am, with great respect,<br />
“To <strong>the</strong> gentlemen, &c.,<br />
“Your humble serv’t,<br />
“JOHN BLAIR.<br />
“Williamsburg, July 16, 1768.”<br />
When <strong>the</strong> letter came to <strong>the</strong> attorney he would have noth<strong>in</strong>g to say <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> affair.<br />
Waller and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong> jail forty-three days, and were discharged f25<br />
without any conditions. While <strong>in</strong> prison <strong>the</strong>y constantly preached through <strong>the</strong><br />
grates. The mobs without used every exertion to prevent <strong>the</strong> people from<br />
hear<strong>in</strong>g, but to little purpose. Many heard, <strong>in</strong>deed, upon whom <strong>the</strong> Word was<br />
<strong>in</strong> power and demonstration.
