gradually taken over by the state
in all countries. Thus, the posts,
which at one time were the perquisite
of kings, again became
their perquisite, or at least, of the
government or state, which, in
these days, amounts to much the
same thing. It is therefore singularly
fitting that they should be
known as the Royal Mails, and
also fitting that the postage stamps
which carry these mails should
form the basis for what is called
"the hobby of kings".
Newfoundland Stamp Oddities
The engraving and printing of
postage stamps is a highly specialized
business, and, despite the
best efforts of those who produce
them, some stamps appear with
curious errors in their design.
Actually, collectors value these
oddities highly. and often pay
fancy prices for them. One United
States airmail stamp was issued in
1918 in sheets of 100 stamps to
sell for $24, but, the lucky collector
who found a sheet with the
central design inverted, sold it
for many times that. The total
value of the stamps in the sheet
rose to approximately $250,000 by
1943.
Of interest but not of any particular
value are other kinds of
errors made in the printing or
engraving of stamps. The well
known 5c. brown stamp issued by
Newfoundland in 1865 has been
criticized because the seal has
strange looking front feet. As a
matter of fact the Harp Seal has
well developed front feet and
claws; and probably the engraver
worked from a woodcut, which
may not have been too accurate.
