It’s been mighty chilly the past
few days and we are thankful
for a nice warm fire in the basement
wood burning stove. My
husband loves the warmth plus
watching the bright red flames
through the glass door of the
stove. I thought he was a little
over zealous when he started
gathering firewood in the summer
months. He checked with
a family about a block from us
that had several trees still down
and uncut from the ice storm
and they were grateful to him
for cutting up and hauling the
wood away. Another neighbor
two doors down told him he
was welcome to his wood, so he
brought it home and stacked it
up, also, with the help of Grandsons
Joel and Caleb. We ended
up with a nice wood pile, hopefully
enough for the winter, and
then he up and had his heart attack.
It was sort of the same way
with the flea market booth. We
gave notice that we would be
packed up and out by August 1-he
had the heart attack on August
22. It was almost as if we were
forewarned to get these things
taken care of. We are extremely
fortunate, though, because if we
should run out of wood, Son Earl
has acreage that provides plenty
and grandsons Joel and Caleb
are really good at helping cut and
stack what is needed. I don’t
know how much a cord of wood
costs nowadays, but I’ll bet it’s
pretty pricey.
Joel and Caleb came in on Saturday
and helped my husband
start cleaning up the yard. The
City had been here a few weeks
back and trimmed the trees that
were growing around the utility
lines, but we still had a lot
of trimming and pick up work
in the back yard. We also have
an abundant amount of leaves in
the front yard, but they didn’t get
that far.
I spent part of the day Friday
helping set up the Pathways
church bazaar and reported for
duty at 7:30 Saturday morning.
We had several booths set up and
served a turkey dinner from 11:00
to 1:00. Some of the ladies had
quilted a pretty big quilt, which
was raffled off, and they had a
silent auction for four decorated
Christmas trees. We closed and
packed everything that was left
over at 2:00. On Sunday morning
they announced that they sold
all of the baked goods, candy and
apple butter, served around 200
turkey dinners, made a little over
$600 on the quilt raffle and ended
up with $6,100 which will go
into the United Methodist Women’s
account and be spent on
by Margaret Dillabough
809 East Hill
missions and other worthwhile
projects. I think that’s pretty
good for such a small church.
Tomorrow, November 11, is
Veterans Day. We have just come
through a somewhat tumultuous
election, and we all need to pray
for our president elect and for this
country. I certainly hope that a
lot of the bitterness and nastiness
of the campaigns will be forgotten
and that we can move on and
strive to make this a better country.
With Veteran’s Day coming
right after the election, we need
to reflect and consider the sacrifices
that so many have made
for this nation. A clip of one of
Ronald Reagan’s Veteran’s Day
speeches was played at church
yesterday and one statement that
he made was that those who gave
their lives for this country actually
gave up two lives--the one
they were living when they went
off to serve our country and the
one they would have had if they
had come back.
I had family members in both
the First and Second World
Wars--my grandfather and father.
I do not remember either
of them talking that much about
their war experiences and wish
now that I had been more inquisitive
and had asked more
questions. Of course I find that I
have that same wish about many
other things now that everyone is
gone.
Yesterday, I picked up a little
booklet that I had put back without
looking through it. I knew
it had pictures in it, but was surprised
at the rest of the contents.
First off, was a Registration Certificate
that says: “To Whom it
may concern, Greetings:
That in accordance with the
proclamation of the President of
the United States, and in compliance
with law, Ernest Hair,
Browns Spring, Mo, Precinct
(unreadable) County of Stone,
State of Mo, has submitted himself
to registration and has by me
been duly registered this 5th day
of June 1917. Signed by M. M.
Cobb, Registrar.” My Pa Hair
would have been 26 years old
when he registered on that summer
day. According to Wikipedia,
we did not enter the war
until April of 1917. Within two
months men were being registered
for the draft and within
three months after the registration
Pa received a pink post card
from the War Department postmarked
Sept 17 in Galena. This
card states: “By direction of the
Secretary of War, you are hereby
ordered to report to the office of
this Local Board at 8 a.m. on the
21 day of Sept, 1917 for military
duty and for transportation to
the Army mobilization camp at
Camp Funston, Kansas. From
the date herein specified for you
to report, you will be in the military
service of the United States
and subject to military law. Failure
to report or unpunctuality are
grave military offenses punishable
by court martial. Willful
failure to report with intention
to evade military service constitutes
desertion, which is a capital
offence in time of war. Present
yourself at the precise hour
specified in order that you may
not begin your military record in
the service of your country with
a delinquency. You will be held
under the orders of this board until
the hour of departure of your
train. During this period the Local
Board will furnish you food
and lodging. If you live within
one hour’s travel of the office of
the Local Board, you may obtain
permission to sleep and eat at
home, but only if you fill out and
forward to the office of the Local
Board at once the printed application
for this permission at the
end of this sheet. You will not
be permitted to take with you on
the train anything but hand baggage.
You do not need bedding
or changes of clothing except as
specified below. You may take
with you only the following articles:
Soap, shaving accessories,
comb and brush, toothbrush
and tooth powder, towels, underclothing
and socks; and if you
desire, changes of collars and
shirts, but you will have no use
for these after arrival at the mobilization
camp. Since you will
not be permitted to retain any
trunks after your arrival at the
railroad station, the articles listed
above should be brought in a
hand bundle. If you desire to do
so, you may return the civilian
clothes you are wearing when
you arrive at the mobilization
camp to your home by express
or otherwise, but if you desire
to make no such arrangement it
will be better to appear in civilian
clothes that you do not care
to keep. (Dated Sept 17, 1917
- Local Board for Stone County,
Mo. Signed by J. M. Flood and
Lewis L. Moore.”
My grandfather would have
still been living at home at that
time, and I have no idea where
he was working. He was a carpenter
by trade, in later years.
But, can you imagine how he
and the others who were drafted
must have felt when they read
the words on that card. Their
whole world was turned upside
down in just a matter of a few
months. I wonder if they were
excited, apprehensive or exactly
what went through their minds.
When I lived in Abilene, Kansas,
Pa came to visit one time and
wanted to tour Fort Riley, Kansas,
which was originally Camp
Funston. Of course, there was
absolutely nothing familiar to
him as that would have been in
the early 1960’s, over forty years
after he was there.
From Camp Funston he was
sent to New York City where
he boarded the U.S.S. Prinz
Friedrich Wilhelm. He was in
Compartment H1, Located on
H Deck Bunk No. (unreadable)
Washroom No. 1, Latrine No. 1.
Abandon Ship Mustering Station
No. 45. He was in the 342nd
Field Artillery with the rank of
Cpl. and there are leave papers
for Aix les Baines, France, the
Savoie Leave Area and a Coblenz
Leave Card for Holsthung,
Germany. There are pictures of
him in full uniform, holding his
rifle, and pictures of him by horse
drawn artillery. He apparently
wrote to Ma all the time he was
in the service, because there is
one post card addressed to Miss
Merry from Ernest. The little
green booklet that held all of
these papers is titled “The American
Soldiers’ Souvenir of Aixles-Bains”
and was published by
The American Y.M.C.A. It has
my grandfather’s name written
in the front with a date of Dec.
27, 1919. The opening page of
the booklet states that Aix-les-
Bains was the first place opened
as a leave area for American
soldiers in France. Although I
sometimes complain about all of
the “stuff” Ma kept, I must admit
there are some real treasures.
If Mother kept this much of
Daddy’s military stuff, it somehow
got lost in the shuffle. I
know he was in the Philippines,
but like so many other men who
served our country, he didn’t talk
about his military service all that
much. I can remember Mother
crying at night when Daddy was
gone, as I am sure many other
wives and children did. I guess
we all long for the day when,
“They will beat their swords into
plowshares and their spears into
pruning hooks. Nation will not
take up sword against nation nor
will they train for war anymore.”
(Isaiah 2:4)
“Our values, our principles and
our determination to succeed as a
free and democratic people will
give us a torch to light the way.
And we will survive and become
the stronger--not only because of
a patriotism that stands for love
of country, but a patriotism that
stands for love of people.” Gerald
Ford.
with Dr. Billy Graham. Jodi
Complex
All you people have given
me a complex with your caller
I.D.’s. You call a number and no
one answers. You call again and
get the same results. You now
begin to wonder – are they ignoring
me, don’t want to talk to
me, or are they really not home?
I think they should do away with
that dratted thing. Enough is
enough.
Offers Food Safety
Tips for Holidays
With the holiday season in full
swing, people will gather for a
wide variety of family meals, office
parties, community/church
banquets and other events where
food will be a main attraction.
Nothing brings people together
like food. While these events are
central to holiday celebration,
there is an increased chance that
people will get sick from a foodborne
illness. The risk of a foodborne
outbreak is even greater
when multitudes of people eat
the same food; it just takes one
bad sauce, dip, or pie etc., to
make numerous people seriously
ill. The Stone County Health
Department (SCHD) encourages
you to be very careful when pre-
paring, serving, and storing foods
for parties, celebrations, dinners,
and banquets. The SCHD is offering
some simple but effective
food safety tips to help protect
you, your family, and guests
from holiday food-borne illness.
Holiday Food Safety Tips
Thawing:
Thawing a turkey in the refrigerator
can take two days or more,
depending on weight. Make sure
the turkey is thawed completely.
Allow approximately 24 hours
for every 4 – 5 pounds.
Turkeys and other poultry can
be thawed in cold water, but the
water should be changed every
30 minutes.
Allow approximately 30 minutes
per pound when thawing in
cold water.
Do not thaw poultry in micro-
wave or low-temp oven; this can
encourage bacteria growth.
Do not use thawing platter
or basin again until properly
washed/sanitized.
Cooking:
Cook stuffed turkey, other
poultry and ground meats to 165
degrees taken at center.
For turkeys, internal cooking
temperature should be 165 degrees
in area between leg and
thigh.
Always use a thermometer to
measure the temperature of the
turkey or other cooked meats.
Preparation/Sanitation
Avoid cross contamination
of food preparation surfaces.
Always wash hands, utensils,
the sink, and anything else that
comes in contact with raw turkey
and its juices with soap and water.
Never cut vegetables or other
foods on the same cutting board
as raw poultry, fish, or ground
meats.
Sanitize preparation surfaces
with a solution of one (1) cap
bleach to one-gallon water.
Sanitize sink after rinsing turkey
and other fresh meats and
before fixing vegetables with solution
of one (1) capful of bleach
for each gallon of water. Let
stand, then drain, running garbage
disposal to sanitize while
draining.
Thoroughly wash hands with
warm soapy water and rinse
well, especially before serving
or eating a meal.
Storing
Keep hot foods hot (at least
135°F) and cold foods cold (no
warmer than 41°F).
Creamy sauces, gravies and
desserts should go into the refrigerator
promptly.
Put turkey and other cooked
poultry in the refrigerator no
more than two hours after cook-
Thursday, November 13, 2008 THE CRANE CHRONICLE/STONE COUNTY REPUBLICAN Page 5
ing. Do not let high-risk foods
sit out to snack on.
For faster cooling of cooked
turkey and other poultry, before
refrigerating, remove meat from
bone and store in shallow pans in
the refrigerator.
Refrigerator temperatures
should always be kept at about
40 degrees F.
Freezer should keep food frozen
solid.
Eat leftovers within three to
four days or place in freezer.
Cold turkey should be fine to
went to clean out the Hippie Bus
like he always does and found
that the amp was taken. His stereo
and speakers were still there,
but someone took his amp that
he worked so hard to get. We still
have the box that it came in and
the receipt. He has only had it
for five months, so it is still new.
We need your help to get it back.
The amp is a 1200 watt Crunch
Amp and it glows blue “crunch”
on top of it when it’s hooked up.
Its silver and about eight inches
by twelve inches in size. We just
want it back. Ty is the best son
and friend you could ever ask for
he has never harmed a person or
thing in his life. So why would
they do this to him? We will never
know, but we will still pray
for them. I know Ty did when
he went to church Sunday morning.
Please give back his amp;
no questions asked just give it
back that is all we want. So if
you know who or where it is call
the police or tell one of us, or just
put it back where you got it. Everyone
knows where the Hippie
Bus works, drop it off there. Just
give it back to Ty. No questions
asked. Please give it back.
Thank you and God Bless,
thieves came from a party on
Olive Street Friday night. That’s
one block from our street which
is College Street that’s walking
distance. So if you know who
was at the party please help find
Ty’s amp and give it back to him.
After a long and tiring election
season we finally have a picture
of Missouri’s political future.
Some will say the picture is
blurred, others will say it is bright
and clear. Let me share with you
what I see for our state.
As I write this message the day
after a national Democratic tidal
wave, it’s easy to hang our heads
and lick our wounds. While I admit
that the races didn’t all go the
way I’d hoped they would, there
are some very positive results
that few are talking about. I’ll
be the first to admit that Republicans
nationwide lost many more
elections than they won. But as
I take a closer look at the results
here in Missouri from November
4th, I feel better and actually I am
finding a lot of positive results.
Republicans won 89 seats in
the Missouri House and still have
a solid and unified majority. We
won 90 seats and took control of
the House in November 2002 for
the first time in 48 years; so to
hold 89 seats in a very poor environment
for Republicans is remarkable.
The Missouri Senate
Republicans actually expanded
their control by adding three
more Senators to their ranks,
giving them a 23 to 11 advantage.
Missouri broke the mold
and voted for John McCain. Missouri
voters refuse to be told how
to act and vote and show why we
are still ‘The Show-Me State’!
Let me give you a quick update
on what took place in some other
legislatures on Election Day.
The Tennessee House switched
from Democrat control (53-46)
to Republican control (51-48).
The Delaware House switched
from Republican control (22-19)
to Democrat control (26-15). In
while the Wisconsin Assembly
(51-47-1) to Democrat control
Overall, a total of nine (9)
chambers switched party hands.
By Francis Skalicky
In these last few days leading
up to Saturday’s opening day
of firearms deer season, much
attention is going to be paid to
scouting, travel plans and any
other hunt preparation that’s yet
to be done. This, of course, will
be followed by the excitement of
actually hunting on Saturday (or
Sunday, if that’s the first opportunity
you have to get out).
In the midst of all this preparation
and excitement, don’t forget
about safety. Safety is always the
most important aspect of deer
season but, unfortunately, this
is the point in the season when
some hunters begin to forget
that.
Of course, the “deer season”
I’m referring to is the November
firearms deer season, which
runs from November 15 through
November 25. This is the main
event of Missouri’s hunting calendar.
Throughout this big event,
it’s important for hunters to remain
safety-conscious. Safety
Pictured above is Noah Fletcher, 13-year-old grandson of Roger
will be important during those
Williams of Crane, with his nine-point buck taken during the Youth
first days of hunting, when it’s
Season on November 1. Noah harvested his deer on their farm in
easy for excitement to overtake
Chariton County, Missouri using a 270-caliber rifle.
good judgment as hunters take
to the field and woods with an
anticipation that’s been building
since last November. Safety
Vaught Receives Rodeo Awards will be equally important in the
latter days of the season when,
for some hunters, the frustration
factor will start to kick in. Some
hunters will have seen whitetails,
but they weren’t close enough to
get a good shot at. There will be
other hunters who haven’t seen
anything and are afraid their favorite
time of year is going to be
nothing but a bust.
Some hunters are going to have
strong urges to stretch the safety
guidelines they learned in hunter
education or from older hunting
peers. Less attention will be paid
to positive identification of a
deer by some individuals. Good
judgment will begin to get nosed
out by risk.
That’s why now is an excellent
time to review the basic safety
principles of deer hunting (which
are actually principles of any type
of safe hunting). Think about it
this way: Which will leave a bigger
impression in your memory
– shooting a deer or shooting another
human being?
Never assume you are the only
hunter in an area, even if you’re
hunting on private property. Assume
every sound or movement
is another hunter until it has been
safely and positively identified
otherwise.
Always take a moment to look
beyond your target before you
pull the trigger. This helps to ensure
that a potentially occupied
building, previously un-noticed
livestock, or a previously un-noticed
hunter – is not in your line
of fire.
Never take your safety “off”
until a deer has been positively
identified and you are ready to
pull the trigger. This helps to
keep your rifle from going off at
an un-planned moment. In addition
to the obvious safety aspects,
this makes just plain good
hunting sense, too. All it takes is
one accidental discharge of your
gun to spook the deer away from
your hunting area for the remainder
of the day (and perhaps the
next several days as well).
Hunters are reminded that, after
the November firearms season,
there will still be several opportunities
to hunt deer. The second
half of the archery season runs
from November 26 through January
15. The muzzle-loader portion
of fall firearms deer hunting
runs from November 28 through
December 7. The firearms antlerless
portion of fall deer hunting,
a hunting opportunity valid in 67
counties in Missouri, is December
13 through December 21.
Finally, the second part of the
youth firearms deer season will
be January 3 through January
4. More information about deer
hunting can be found at your
Preparing Your Home for Winter Weather
The first day of winter is not
until December 21, but many
homeowners in the state may be
taken by surprise by dropping
temperatures. “The time to winterize
your home is before the
cold weather really sets in,” according
to Ray Palermo, director
of public relations for Response
Insurance. He said that taking a
few simple steps now could save
time, money and a lot of stress
later on, adding “prevention is
the key in maintaining a safe and
warm environment, and in minimizing
the risk of winter damage.”
Indoors: Chimneys used for
wood burning stoves and fireplaces
should be checked for
creosote build up. This tar like
substance can lead to a chimney
fire if not cleaned off. Have
a professional check your home
heating system both for energy
efficiency and carbon monoxide.
Buy a carbon monoxide detector
for any nearby living spaces and
affix it near the ceiling. Never
use a kerosene heater. If a space
heater is needed, use only an enclosed
heating element product
with an approval label from an
independent testing organization,
such as Underwriters Laboratories.
Nearly half of a home’s
heat loss is through the roof.
Senator Jack
Goodman
Re-elected to
Leadership
Position
Senator Jack Goodman (R-Mt.
Vernon) last week on November
6 was unanimously re-elected
by his peers to serve as Assistant
Majority Floor Leader of the
Missouri Senate Majority Caucus.
“Jack is a strong voice who
stands up to special interests
for his district and the people
of Missouri,” presumptive Senate
Leader Charlie Shields (R-
St. Joseph) said. “His continued
leadership as Assistant Majority
Floor Leader will help us continue
to protect taxpayers, especially
in these uncertain times.”
Senator Goodman was reelected
to his position in a party
caucus in the state Capitol following
last Tuesday’s General
Election. He will work in concert
with floor leader Sen. Kevin
Engler (R-Farmington) to help
set legislative priorities for their
party and lead the effort to advance
said priorities.
“Once again, I am honored to
be selected by my peers to serve
in this important leadership position,”
Sen. Goodman said. “The
legislative session is just two
months away, and I am looking
forward to continuing our important
work in improving the lives
of Missourians across the state.”
The First Regular session of
the 95th General Assembly will
January 7.
Make sure your attic has insulation
with an R-value of at least
45. Weather strip windows and
doors to maximize your heating
efficiency.
Outdoors: Clean gutters of debris
and fall leaves to prevent ice
build up that can back up under
the roof line. Swimming pools
should be drained to the manufacturers
recommended water
level and winterized with the
recommended pH level and chlorine,
Drain skimmer, heater filter,
pump and piping, Disconnect and
store any water slides or diving
boards and secure the fence and
gate around the pool. Be sure to
close the interior shut-off valve
of any exterior water faucets and
then drain any remaining water
from the exterior faucet itself.
Disconnect any hoses and drain
out any remaining water. Insulate
exterior faucets and pipes to
help prevent freezing.
