COURSE OBJECTIVES<br />

<strong>One</strong> <strong>Day</strong> <strong>in</strong> M<strong>in</strong>d/<strong>Body</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e is an <strong>in</strong>troduction to the<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of m<strong>in</strong>d/body medic<strong>in</strong>e, with an emphasis on its<br />

efficacy <strong>in</strong> treat<strong>in</strong>g medical symptoms and improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

disease management.<br />

This course will expla<strong>in</strong> the scientific foundation<br />

of m<strong>in</strong>d/body medic<strong>in</strong>e and describe the cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

<strong>in</strong>terventions shown to decrease the frequency and<br />

<strong>in</strong>tensity of medical symptoms and conditions caused or<br />

exacerbated by stress, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Autoimmune Disease<br />

• Cancer<br />

• Cardiac Disease<br />

• Chronic Pa<strong>in</strong><br />

• Depression and Anxiety<br />

• Gastro<strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>al<br />

Disorders<br />

• Infertility<br />

• Insomnia<br />

• Menopause<br />

These <strong>in</strong>terventions have been shown to improve<br />

patient disease management. This course is designed to<br />

encourage participant <strong>in</strong>teraction and comb<strong>in</strong>es didactic<br />

presentation with experiential learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Course components <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

• Elicitation of the relaxation response<br />

• Cognitive/behavioral strategies<br />

• Cop<strong>in</strong>g skills<br />

TAKE AWAY LEARNING<br />

• Understand basic concepts of m<strong>in</strong>d/body medic<strong>in</strong>e<br />

• Understand cl<strong>in</strong>ical applications of m<strong>in</strong>d/body medic<strong>in</strong>e<br />

• Experience elicitation of the relaxation response<br />
