course Description<br />

This Acute Pain Management course is designed for a primary target audience of<br />

anesthesiologists. Primary care physicians, hospitalists, and other allied health<br />

professionals who are responsible for the Pain Management of patients in Acute Pain that<br />

are either in hospital or pre-hospital may also find the course of interest. The Acute Pain<br />

Management Symposium will focus on a comprehensive review from Pharmacologic<br />

Management, Adjuvant therapies to Advanced pain management techniques and<br />

strategies. The course will include workshops on complementary medicine<br />

(acupuncture, bio-feedback, relaxation techniques) as well as ultrasound guided blocks<br />

in the upper and lower extremities.<br />

Learning objectives<br />

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:<br />

• Evaluate the physiological and psychological effects of acute pain<br />

• Determine how to maximize adjuvant techniques in acute pain medicine<br />

• Utilize advanced pain management technologies such as Patient Controlled Analgesia<br />

• Assess and measure pain and treatments of pain<br />

• Critically evaluate the use of pharmacologic and non-pharmacological techniques<br />

• Satisfy MA Board of Registration in Medicine (BORM) Pain Management and End-of-<br />

Life Care training requirements, including counseling patients on the side effects and<br />

additive nature of prescription medications.<br />

Anesthesiologists, hospitalists, surgeons, primary care physicians responsible for acute<br />

pain management in their settings. Nurses and nurse practitioners with a focus on acute<br />

pain management.<br />
