Pediatric Sedation | Outside of the Operating Room | An International Multidisciplinary Symposium

Full Day Pediatric Sedation Simulation Objectives
Pediatric Sedation Hands-On Simulation
Simulation is now recognized by the American Society
of Anesthesiologists (ASA) in the “October 20, 2010
statement on granting privileges for deep sedation to
non-anesthesiologist sedation practitioners.” Although
this sedation conference provides AMA PRA Category
1 Credits for the didactic and simulator portions, this
does not imply endorsement by the ASA. The ASA does
not endorse nor certify any sedation-related training
curriculum.
This year we will offer two (2) full days of unique handson
experiences through immersion in multi-specialty
directed sedation scenarios. Expert faculty from multiple
disciplines, both national and international, will lead
these scenarios. Space is limited as these workshops
will offer a small group of participants the opportunity
to immerse in simulation. Participants will receive
scenarios and course materials. Each day will feature
unique scenarios directed by faculty in Hospital Medicine,
Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Dental Medicine
and Nursing. Each participant will rotate through 5
sedation simulation scenarios designed to offer handson
experience and opportunity to learn and apply new
knowledge. Experience in Basic and/or Advanced
Airway Management with hands-on participation and
state-of-the-art airway devices will complete this full day
of training.
1. Medical simulation is a highly adaptable tool
for evaluating individual knowledge and team
performance.
2. Medical simulation can improve patient safety
by raising an individual’s awareness of their
practice and by enhancing team cohesion and
performance.
3. Simulation provides a safe arena for learning
and evaluation, trains with actual equipment
used in the clinical realm, and provides for
repetition and reflection.
4. Medical simulation should be educational,
reflective and fun.
Objectives
1. Understand the importance of simulation context
and physical setting.
2. Understand the importance of human-factors
leading to and in the management of crisis.
3. Anticipate and prepare for the management of
rare events.
4. Understand the components of a simulationbased
learning encounter.
5. Learn the advantages of simulation-based
learning.
6. Understand the elements of effective teamwork
and communication.
7. Develop an understanding of how simulation
may be incorporated into credentialing and
training of sedation care providers.
Pediatric Airway Workshop (Basic/Advanced)
Objectives:
1. Review the American Society of Anesthesiologists
(ASA) airway algorithm.
2. Compare the normal and abnormal pediatric
airway.
3. Understand the preparation for an expected
difficult airway.
4. Understand the options available in the
management of the difficult pediatric airway.
5. Formulate a emergency preparedness plan in
the event of an unanticipated difficult airway..
6. Understand the advantages, disadvantages,
challenges and risks associated with supraglottic
devices.
7. Understand the etiologies of airway obstruction
and techniques in their management.
