HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL
SOLVING EVERYDAY PROBLEMS IN BREAST
PATHOLOGY: A MORPHOLOGICAL APPROACH
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will focus on diagnostic problems encountered
in the daily practice of breast pathology and especially on
those with important clinical implications. The discussions
will emphasize the distinction of benign lesions from morphologically
similar malignant ones and the differentiation
of situations that require further evaluation from those that
do not.
The faculty will tailor their discussions to a level appropriate
for experienced general surgical pathologists; the speakers
will also discuss fine points of diagnosis for the benefit of
those pathologists already conversant with the well-recognized
problem areas. The late afternoon sessions will consist
of concurrent informal discussions of selected practical
issues and diagnostic topics. Participants will be able to
take part in one or more of these presentations according
to their specific professional needs and personal preferences.
Students will also have the opportunity to study a
large collection of illustrative cases at their leisure. The
course will include self-assessment modules that qualify for
the Maintenance of Certification program of the American
Board of Pathology.
Upon completing this course, students should have the
tools needed to solve many problems encountered in the
diagnosis of breast diseases. These tools include: specific
morphological criteria, diagnostic algorithms, knowledge of
diagnostic pitfalls and ways to negotiate them, and an
understanding of the indications for and limitations of special
diagnostic techniques.
