Dur<strong>in</strong>g the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, CIRES and NOAA researchers developed new methods <strong>for</strong> determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the fate of leak<strong>in</strong>g gases and oil that<br />
could pose a threat to fish and wildlife.<br />
Contributions to NOAA’s Vision<br />
CIRES’ fundamental research priority—to enhance<br />
the understand<strong>in</strong>g and prediction of Earth’s environment—complements<br />
NOAA’s priorities, articulated <strong>in</strong><br />
New Priorities <strong>for</strong> the 21st Century: NOAA Strategic<br />
Plan FY05–FY10. CIRES’ cross-cutt<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />
research supports the four Mission Goals identified <strong>in</strong> the<br />
NOAA Strategic Plan: Ecosystems, Climate, Weather and<br />
Water, and Commerce and Transportation. The follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
are examples of CIRES research <strong>in</strong> support of these goals.<br />
Ecosystem Mission Goal: Protect, restore and manage<br />
the use of coastal and ocean resources through<br />
an ecosystem approach to management.<br />
CIRES contributes to NOAA’s ecosystem mission goal by<br />
implement<strong>in</strong>g new approaches to monitor<strong>in</strong>g biotic and<br />
abiotic conditions <strong>in</strong> remote ocean and coastal areas; by<br />
improv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>ecasts <strong>for</strong> extreme weather events that impact<br />
coastal areas; and by develop<strong>in</strong>g and archiv<strong>in</strong>g new<br />
data sets and other <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation products that can help<br />
assess coastal hazards and support seafloor research.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, CIRES<br />
scientists were at the front l<strong>in</strong>es of research <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the dynamics, chemistry and impacts of the spill. Several<br />
important results emerged, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the discovery of a<br />
new set of oil-vapor chemicals that <strong>for</strong>m organic aerosols<br />
(a harmful air pollutant) as well as estimates of the exposure<br />
risks of mar<strong>in</strong>e species to potentially toxic compounds<br />
such as benzene.<br />
In other work, CIRES researchers developed 17 community<br />
and five regional seamless, <strong>in</strong>tegrated, bathymetrictopographic<br />
Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) of U.S.<br />
coasts, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Alaska, Hawaii and the Virg<strong>in</strong> Islands.<br />
The DEMs are <strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong> the model<strong>in</strong>g of coastal<br />
processes, such as storms, sediment transport, ocean<br />
currents and sea-level rise; ecosystem management and<br />
habitat research; coastal and mar<strong>in</strong>e spatial plann<strong>in</strong>g;<br />
