P-3 science flights over the Gulf of Mexico to study air-quality risks caused by the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.<br />

Individual Per<strong>for</strong>mance Awards<br />

The CIRES Awards Committee, comprised of CIRES<br />

Members’ Council representatives, annually reviews<br />

nom<strong>in</strong>ations and recommends awards <strong>for</strong> outstand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

professional achievement. Three Outstand<strong>in</strong>g Per<strong>for</strong>mance<br />

Awards are given <strong>for</strong> science and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and two <strong>for</strong><br />

service. Each award is <strong>for</strong> $2,000, and each recipient also<br />

receives a desktop trophy. W<strong>in</strong>ners of the CIRES Outstand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mance Awards <strong>for</strong> Science and Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

2010 were Dave Carter, Dave Costa and Paul Johnson of<br />

ESRL Physical <strong>Sciences</strong> Division <strong>for</strong> their work to design,<br />

prototype, build and deploy a new network of snow-level<br />

radars <strong>for</strong> Cali<strong>for</strong>nia; Paul Loto’aniu and Juan Rodriguez of<br />

the Space Weather Prediction Center <strong>for</strong> their <strong>in</strong>vestigation<br />

of the failure of the Galaxy-15 geostationary communications<br />

satellite; and a team consist<strong>in</strong>g of Ken Aik<strong>in</strong>, Roya<br />

Bahre<strong>in</strong>i, John Holloway, Gerhard Hübler, Dan Lack, Just<strong>in</strong><br />

Langridge, Andy Neuman, John Nowak, Jeff Peischl, Anne<br />

Perr<strong>in</strong>g, Ilana Pollack, Harald Stark and Carsten Warneke<br />

of the ESRL Chemical <strong>Sciences</strong> Division <strong>for</strong> their support<br />

of the NOAA P-3 science flights <strong>in</strong> June 2010 over the Gulf<br />

of Mexico to assess the potential air-quality risks posed<br />

by the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill crisis to workers/<br />

citizens <strong>in</strong> the Gulf and surround<strong>in</strong>g areas. Awards <strong>for</strong><br />

Outstand<strong>in</strong>g Per<strong>for</strong>mance <strong>for</strong> Service went to Craig Tierney<br />

of ESRL Global Systems Division <strong>for</strong> his work as a leader of<br />

the High Per<strong>for</strong>mance Comput<strong>in</strong>g (HPC) team that has led<br />

to significant improvements that have served CIRES and<br />

and Kather<strong>in</strong>e Leitzell of the National Snow and Ice Data<br />

Center <strong>for</strong> her leadership and <strong>in</strong>itiative as science writer<br />

and editor <strong>for</strong> NSIDC’s hugely visible Arctic Sea Ice News<br />

and Analysis (ASINA) product, which provides a monthly<br />

scientific sea-ice analysis that is picked up by news media<br />

worldwide, and <strong>for</strong> her work <strong>for</strong> the Antarctic Glaciological<br />

Data Center. Leslie Hartten (Physical <strong>Sciences</strong> Division-<br />

PSD) received the <strong>2011</strong> Director’s Award <strong>for</strong> Diversity.
