Project Goal: Per<strong>for</strong>m cutt<strong>in</strong>g-edge micrometeorological and<br />

climatological research over the open ocean aboard research<br />

vessels, sea-based towers and buoys.<br />

Milestone 1. Complete construction of synthesis data set<br />

<strong>for</strong> VOCALS-REX data.<br />

The VAMOS (Variability of the American Monsoon<br />

Systems) Ocean-Cloud-Atmosphere-Land Study Regional<br />

Experiment—known as VOCALS-REX—was added to the<br />

2001-2007 synthesis data set.<br />

NOAA Goal 2: Climate<br />

Project Goal: Study <strong>in</strong>tercont<strong>in</strong>ental transport events to better<br />

understand their effects on overall air quality and its impacts<br />

on public health.<br />

Milestone 1. An aerosol measurement system will be<br />

deployed to India’s Ganges Valley to study the effect of<br />

aerosol on radiation, convection and cloud <strong>for</strong>mation. The<br />

study will span the pre- to post-monsoon seasons.<br />

The aerosol equipment as part of the Ganges Valley<br />

Aerosol eXperiment (GVAX) was <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> June <strong>2011</strong>.<br />

The site is located <strong>in</strong> the foothills of the Himalayas above<br />

Na<strong>in</strong>ital, India, and will exam<strong>in</strong>e transport from the<br />

Ganges Valley as well as long-range transport from Ch<strong>in</strong>a,<br />

the Arabian Pen<strong>in</strong>sula and Pakistan. Comparisons will<br />

be made with an ancillary site of similar measurements<br />

located <strong>in</strong> the Ganges Valley to evaluate changes <strong>in</strong> the<br />

aerosol and cloud properties as the air mass moves up the<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong> slope.<br />

Project Goal: Gather and analyze atmospheric observations to<br />

characterize meteorological processes that contribute to highpollution<br />

episodes. Compare these measurements with airquality<br />

<strong>for</strong>ecast<strong>in</strong>g model predictions to assess and improve<br />

research model per<strong>for</strong>mance.<br />
