Chapter two focuses on traditions of appraisal in western,<br />
continental Europe. It will analyze the few available published<br />
quotations and translations of the writings of archival<br />
theorists, including Friedrich Meinecke, Hans Meissner, Marcel<br />
Baudot, Johannes Papritz, Elio Lodolini and Hans Booms. The<br />
discussion will concentrate on the theoretical division between<br />
content analysis and structural analysis in the identification of<br />
value. Several of these theorists also expose two important<br />
issues that require clarification if a coherent theory of<br />
Appraisal is to be developed: the impartial perspective of the<br />
archivist, and the relativity of value.<br />
Chapter three focuses on British traditions of appraisal as<br />
seen in the writings of Sir Hilary Jenkinson and Sir James Grigg.<br />
The discussion will analyze Jenkinson's thoery of the nature of<br />
archives, and will relate it to Grigg's attempt to combine<br />
historical and administrative value in such a w ay as to preserve<br />
the archival and probative nature of archives.<br />
Chapter four will focus on the North American traditions of<br />
appraisal as seen primarily in the writings of Philip Brooks and<br />
Theodore Schellenberg. Their influential concepts of evidential<br />
value and informational value reflect a practical strategy that<br />
equates use with value, and deflect the intellectual resolution<br />
of theoretical problems.<br />
