Genetic Transformation of Crops for Resistance to Insect Pests 227
TABLE 7.3
Insect-Resistant Transgenic Crops Expressing Protease Inhibitors from Plants
Crop Transgene Remarks References
Tobacco CpTi Resistant to Helicoverpa armigera. Zhao et al. (1998); F.O. Zhang
SBTI Reduces the proteolytic activity of gut
extracts obtained from Helicoverpa
armigera larvae.
Increased insect mortality, reduced insect
growth, and reduced plant damage by
Heliothis virescens, Heliothis zea, Spodoptera
littoralis, Manduca sexta, and Helicoverpa
armigera.
GTPI Growth inhibition of 22 to 40% of
Helicoverpa armigera.
Potato Kti 3, C-II, and
PU-IV from
soybean
Reduction in larval weight of Spodoptera
littoralis by 50%.
et al. (1998); Gatehouse et al.
(1993)
Hilder et al. (1987); Hoffman
et al. (1992); Yeh et al. (1997);
McManus et al. (1999);
Charity et al. (1999)
Wu et al. (1997)
Marchetti et al. (2000)
Cotton CpTi Resistant to Helicoverpa armigera. Li et al. (1998)
Maize Oryzacystatin Resistant to Southern maize rootworm,
Diabrotica undecimpunctata
Edmonds et al. (1996)
Rice Kunitz type SBTI Resistant to Brown planthopper, Nilaparvata
lugens.
Lee et al. (1999)
Resistant to insect pests. Duan et al. (1996)
CpTi Resistant to Chilo suppressalis and Sesamia
inferens.
Xu et al. (1996)
WTI-1B Retarded larval growth of Chilo suppressalis. Mochizuki et al. (1999)
Sugarcane Proteinase Increased antibiosis to larvae of sugarcane Nutt et al. (1999)
inhibitor II grubs, Antitrogus consanguineus.
Cabbage CpTi Resistant to Pieris rapae. Fang et al. (1997)
Potato OCI Caused 53% mortality of Leptinotarsa
decemlineata larvae.
Lecardonnel et al. (1999)
Wheat TI from barley Signifi cant reduction in survival rate of the
Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella.
Altpeter et al. (1999)
Chinese Modifi ed CpTi Resistant to Pieris rapae in lab and fi eld. G.D. Yang et al. (2002)
cabbage (sck)
Tobacco Brassica juncea, Resistant to tobacco cut worm, Spodoptera Mandal et al. (2002)
BjTi
litura.
Tobacco PI 2 (MTI-2) Caused larval mortality and decreased
mean larval weight of Spodoptera littoralis.
De Leo et al. (1998)
(GTPI) have shown growth inhibition of 22 to 40%, but no larval mortality was observed
(Wu et al., 1997).
Serine PI cDNA from cabbage, B. oleracea var. capitata (BoPI), has been subcloned and
expressed in transgenic tobacco to test the ability of BoPI to enhance resistance to insects
in a heterologous system (Pulliam et al., 2001). The transgenic plants containing BoPI gene
were better than the other transgenic plants with different PI genes, and compared favorably
with Bt cry1Ac transgenic plants in a bioassay with tobacco budworm, H. virescens.
High levels of mustard trypsin PI 2 (MTI-2) expressed in tobacco and Arabidopsis have
shown deleterious effects against S. littoralis larvae, causing larval mortality and reduction
