The falling leaves drift by my window…...ummh...I do believe that is a song but it is also reality
here in Muhlenberg County. What beautiful fall days we are having (I know, we do need the rain)
but the weather is as wonderful as all of the ARTS that are flying by in this county.
We had 400 5 th graders from our county to travel to Owensboro Riverpark Center for their Arts
in the A.M. Program on September 14th & 15th. The students and chaperones had a great time on
this trip! Many thanks goes to the Felix Martin Foundation for funding this project and for River
Park in making this program available for our students.
Our Arts Barbershop Chorus (ABC) ( open to all ladies in Muhlenberg County) is being asked
to sing at various functions. If you like to sing and have great fun, please feel free to join us each
Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at the Cooperative Extension Office. ( no audition expected)
We will begin the Muhlenberg Arts Dulcimer Ensemble(MADE) for students in 4 th -8 th grade
after fall break in October.. Our dulcimers have been delivered and we are ready to go. If you
know of a student interested in playing or learning to play the dulcimer, have them contact the
Cooperative Extension office. Also, our Muhlenberg Arts Youth Chorus (MAYC) had its first
rehearsal last week with students from both Middle Schools, South Elementary and Longest
Elementary. What beautiful music they made and I, along with their parents, was excited at the
possibilities for this chorus. We want to give our youth an opportunity to experience all types of
music, choral and instrumental, in an after-school environment. So please help us with these
endeavors.
Hats off to Leslie England for a great job in directing “Harvey”! Great production!
The Kitchen Tour and the Chris Beaty Concert, sponsored by the Duncan Center and both
tourism commissions was a huge success. Thank you for this lovely day!
The play/with music, “The Magic in Muhlenberg County”, is making lots of progress, and our
committee has the privilege of reviewing the work as Dr. Rodgers completes each section. . Keep
your ears and eyes open for this upcoming program.
Also, thanks to council members, Nancy Countzler, Frances Jarvis and Linda Hawkins for
driving to Princeton this past Thursday to help with Cultural Heritage Day for the Pennyrile Area
Homemakers Fall Meeting.and assist Maureen Sellars with the Dulcimer workshops.
If there is anything in the ARTS area that I can assist with: schools, civic organizations, businesses,
please feel free to give me a call at the Extension office: 338-3124.
Sincerely,
Cora
A Special Message from the President of the Arts Council
Joy!
. Little rain has come our way lately, yet we can always count our blessings! Many of
the arts activities that individuals have worked so hard to see succeed, have indeed been a
huge success this Fall. One element that has lended itself well to the success of these activities
is the weather and we have been so blessed with perfect weather to enjoy large crowds
as they have been entertained by a multitude of activities - from Squash and Gobble to
Thumb Picking Weekend to the local High School Band shows.
Besides these outdoor activites MCTI continues to thrill audiences with plays like
"Harvey" and the Merle Travis Center is constantly a spot to enjoy “state of the art” productions
. As each month passes I am impressed with all that is happening here in our county. I
don't intend to become redundant but ,with such a great slate of Arts Activities ,I can't help
but say again to all of you who serve and promote these events:”a great big thank you” for all
you do for the Arts. We certainly have much more to look forward to as the creative minds
continue to spin and showcase great talents. Joy
Owensboro Catholic they were Reserve Grand Champions,
“The Magic in Muhlenberg County”
A Play with Music by James W. Rodgers - Original Music by
Brief Synopsis:
Dr. Johnie Dean
Two eccentric Great Aunts devise a guessing game to prod their 11 year old niece
into writing her assigned paper on the subject, ―Why I‘m Proud To Be From
Muhlenberg County.‖ The answer, the Aunts claim, can be found by combining the
secret words that lie behind each letter of the county‘s name. These secret words
generate a ‗magic‘ that over the years has produced many distinguished citizens,
which, in turn, has made the county ―special‖ and ―unique.‖
Being somewhat isolated and penned in by seven other counties has never
been a curse, but rather a blessing for those who have distinguished themselves in
Muhlenberg County. The county‘s environment– its setting and resources—plus
its freedom from distractions have provided the atmosphere—the ‗Magic‘ for
greater self-expression and creative output. James W. Rodgers
