Abstract: <strong>Lorraine</strong> <strong>Miller</strong> <strong>Sherer</strong> (1898-1985) was the superintendent of elementary education for Los Angeles County and<br />
a specialist in early childhood development at the UCLA School of Education. After her retirement, <strong>Sherer</strong> began compiling<br />
the first history of the Mohave people of California and Arizona. The collection consists of research materials on Mohave<br />
Indian culture and history from the early Spanish period to 1976. Included is a large collection of books and articles,<br />
manuscripts, maps, tape recordings and notes.<br />

Biography<br />
Born June 25, 1898 in Missouri; graduated in 1918 from Los Angeles Normal School with diploma in education; became<br />
superintendant of elementary education for Los Angeles County after teaching in Long Beach and serving as principal in<br />
South Santa Anita school; specialist in early childhood development at UCLA School of Education; longtime friend of Mohave<br />
nation, <strong>Sherer</strong> dedicated her retirement to compiling the first history of the Mohave people of California and Arizona; died<br />
March 16, 1985.<br />
Scope and Content<br />
Collection consists of research materials on Mohave Indian culture and history from the early Spanish period to 1976, which<br />
relates to <strong>Sherer</strong>'s work on Mohave ethno-history and language. Includes large collection of books and articles as well as<br />
manuscripts, maps, tape recordings and notes.<br />
