FDI Appoints New<br />
Executive Director<br />
The FDI World <strong>Dental</strong><br />
Federation announced that Dr.<br />
David Alexander would become<br />
executive director of FDI effective<br />
August 21. Dr. Alexander<br />
takes over duties from Dr. John<br />
Dr. David Alexander Hunt, who has served as interim<br />
executive director of FDI since<br />
November 2007.<br />
A specialist in dental public health and a<br />
former general dentist, Dr. Alexander has extensive<br />
commercial and administrative experience,<br />
most recently with GlaxoSmithKline,<br />
where he was responsible for developing oral<br />
health strategy and building key partnerships<br />
with major international dental organizations<br />
and dental schools.<br />
Dr. Alexander obtained his dental degree<br />
from the University of Liverpool, a Master’s<br />
degree in Community <strong>Dental</strong> Health from the<br />
University of London and completed a residency<br />
in dental public health at the National Institutes<br />
of <strong>Dental</strong> Research in Bethesda, Maryland. a<br />
Alberta Elects New<br />
President<br />
Dr. Cliff Swanlund of Calgary,<br />
Alberta, was recently named the<br />
new president of the Alberta<br />
<strong>Dental</strong> <strong>Association</strong> and College<br />
(ADA&C). A 1976 graduate of<br />
the University of Manitoba, Dr.<br />
Swanlund has been in general<br />

practice in Calgary since 1980.<br />
Dr. Swanlund has extensive<br />
involvement with several ADA&C committees<br />
including the Continuing Competency<br />
Committee, which developed the competency<br />
profile for dentists in Alberta. He was<br />
also a member of the ADA&C’s Task Force<br />
on Advertising, the Task Force on Conscious<br />
Sedation and the Committee on Infection<br />
Prevention and Control Standards for the<br />
<strong>Dental</strong> Office. a<br />

Dr. Frédéric Duke of Moncton,<br />
New Brunswick, was recently<br />
named the new president of the<br />
New Brunswick <strong>Dental</strong> Society<br />
(NBDS).<br />
Dr. Duke is a 1998 DMD<br />
graduate of Laval University.<br />

Mediation Committee. Dr. Duke maintains<br />
a private practice in general dentistry in<br />

Brunswick <strong>Dental</strong> Society<br />
Aitken, Dr. William (Bill) J.: A 1952 graduate of the University<br />
of Alberta, Dr. Aitken of Prince George, British Columbia,<br />
passed away on July 1.<br />
Banting, Dr. Ronald W.: A 1974 graduate of the University of<br />
Toronto, Dr. Banting of Niagara Falls, Ontario, passed away<br />
on July 15.<br />
Blackmore, Dr. Robert V.: Dr. Blackmore of Sherwood Park,<br />
Alberta, passed away on June 29. He graduated from the<br />
University of Alberta in 1943.<br />
Lane, Dr. Arnold (Arne) H.: A 1949 graduate of McGill<br />
University, Dr. Lane of Victoria, B.C., passed away on July 6.<br />
Ng, Dr. George C.: Dr. Ng of Vancouver, B.C., passed away<br />
on July 13. He graduated from the University of Toronto in<br />
