<strong>in</strong>terpretation, sentence (10b) conta<strong>in</strong>s awwal, one <strong>of</strong> the lexical items which –<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to Al-Moaily (2008: 40) – express the past tense.<br />

Al-Moaily (2008) does not dist<strong>in</strong>guish among the types <strong>of</strong> structures<br />

conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the copula fi. An analysis <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terviews <strong>in</strong> Al-Moaily (2008) shows<br />

that fi occurs <strong>in</strong> several such constructions. The first series <strong>of</strong> examples illustrate<br />

the use <strong>of</strong> fi as a predicative copula:<br />
