Pidg<strong>in</strong>s have also been classified on the basis <strong>of</strong> social criteria. Bakker<br />
(1995: 27-28), for <strong>in</strong>stance, classifies pidg<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> the social situation <strong>in</strong><br />
which they are used. Four types are accord<strong>in</strong>gly dist<strong>in</strong>guished: (i) maritime<br />
pidg<strong>in</strong>s; (ii) tra<strong>de</strong> pidg<strong>in</strong>s; (iii) <strong>in</strong>terethnic contact languages; (iv) work force<br />
pidg<strong>in</strong>s. All four varieties un<strong>de</strong>r consi<strong>de</strong>ration can be assigned to the category <strong>of</strong><br />
work force pidg<strong>in</strong>s. Sebba (1997: 26-33) suggests a typology accord<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />
social context <strong>of</strong> the language‟s orig<strong>in</strong>s and i<strong>de</strong>ntifies the follow<strong>in</strong>g types: (i)<br />
military and police pidg<strong>in</strong>s; (ii) seafar<strong>in</strong>g and tra<strong>de</strong> pidg<strong>in</strong>s; (iii) plantation<br />
pidg<strong>in</strong>s; (iv) m<strong>in</strong>e and construction pidg<strong>in</strong>s; (v) immigrants‟ pidg<strong>in</strong>s; (vi) tourist<br />
pidg<strong>in</strong>s; (vii) urban contact vernaculars. All four varieties qualify for the group <strong>of</strong><br />
immigrants‟ pidg<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
The corpus <strong>of</strong> empirical data is ma<strong>de</strong> up <strong>of</strong> both published and<br />
unpublished sources. The published sources <strong>in</strong>clu<strong>de</strong> transcripts <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviews,<br />
answers to questionnaires, translations <strong>of</strong> test sentences <strong>de</strong>signed to elicit specific<br />
data. The unpublished sources consist <strong>of</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e sources, such as <strong>in</strong>ternet<br />
discussion lists (between users with different mother tongues), songs, poems (see<br />
the list <strong>of</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e sources <strong>in</strong> the References section). It is perhaps worth not<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that, to my knowledge, this type <strong>of</strong> source has not been tapped <strong>in</strong> any previous<br />
study <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arab</strong>ic-lexified pidg<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
Except for the data from Al-Moaily (2008), which are transliterated from<br />
the orig<strong>in</strong>al version <strong>in</strong> <strong>Arab</strong>ic script, all examples appear <strong>in</strong> the orthography or<br />
system <strong>of</strong> transcription used <strong>in</strong> the sources. The length <strong>of</strong> quotations has been kept<br />
to a reasonable m<strong>in</strong>imum. Relevant items <strong>in</strong> quotations are <strong>in</strong> bold characters. All<br />
quotations are accompanied by glosses and their translation. Whenever known,<br />
examples also <strong>in</strong>clu<strong>de</strong> the specification <strong>of</strong> the L1 <strong>of</strong> the speaker as well as the<br />
length <strong>of</strong> stay.<br />
2. Pidg<strong>in</strong> Madam<br />
Pidg<strong>in</strong> Madam 2 is spoken <strong>in</strong> Lebanon by Sri Lankan female domestic<br />
workers, with S<strong>in</strong>hala as their L1, and their <strong>Arab</strong> employers. Sociol<strong>in</strong>guistic<br />
issues, such as the context <strong>in</strong> which this variety emerged, its status and functions,<br />
are discussed by Haraty et al. (2007) and, at great length, by Bizri (2010).<br />
L<strong>in</strong>guistic analyses <strong>of</strong> the pidg<strong>in</strong> can be found <strong>in</strong> two papers (Bizri 2005 and<br />
2009) and <strong>in</strong> a monograph (Bizri 2010), from which the relevant data are taken.<br />
Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Bizri (2010: <strong>12</strong>7), Pidg<strong>in</strong> Madam “has Ø <strong>in</strong> the predicative<br />
and equative functions, and fī <strong>in</strong> the existential and locative positions”. This<br />
distribution is illustrated by the follow<strong>in</strong>g examples given by Bizri (2010: <strong>12</strong>7-<br />
<strong>12</strong>8):<br />
2<br />
Also called “Pidg<strong>in</strong> Madame” (see e.g. Bizri 2010).<br />
