Second, shall be descended by blood from some one who has served<br />
in the army or navy of the United States in said war, and who either<br />
is still in said service or whose said service in the army or na vy was<br />
terminated by death or an honorable discharge.<br />
The recipients are designated La Verne Noyes Scholars.<br />
THE CONGER PEACE PRIZE<br />
Everett L. Conger, D.D., for the promotion of interest in the<br />
movement toward universal peace and for the furtherance of public<br />
speaking, established in 1912 the Conger Peace Prize. The income<br />
from one thousand dollars is given annually as a prize for the composition<br />
and delivery in public of the best essay on some subject<br />
related to the peace of the world. The general preparation for the<br />
contest is made under the direction of the department of English.<br />
LOAN FUNDS<br />
The Cleveland Loan Fund was established by Miss Olive Cleveland<br />
for the purpose of aiding students to obtain an education. The<br />
income is lent without interest to worthy students who may need<br />
such assistance.<br />
In 1923, Mr. Howard R. Hughes, of Galveston, Texas, gave $5,000<br />
to constitute an additional fund for loans to students. Mr. Raphael<br />
Herman, of Los Angeles, has provided a like sum to establish the<br />
Raphael Herman Loan Fund, which may be used for loans or for<br />
scholarships at the discretion of the Institute. A further gift of<br />
$5,000 has been made by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Noble of Pasadena to<br />
establish the Noble Loan and Scholarship Fund.<br />
In 1932, Mr. and Mrs. Willard C. Jackson established at the Institute<br />
the Thomas Jackson Memorial Loan Fund in memory of their<br />
son, a member of the sophomore class of that year, who died during<br />
the fall term, at the beginning of a very promising career. The<br />
original gift for this fund was $10,000 and the donors have since
