All students are required to pass a comprehensive examination in English and<br />

History at the end of the Sophomore year. This examination does not cover specific<br />

courses, but the general attainments of the students in their systematic work<br />

throughout the first two years.<br />

UNDERGRADUATE SUBJECTS<br />

H. 1 a, b, c. Ancient and Medieval History, r units (3-0-2); first, second<br />

and third terms.<br />

Lectures and discussions upon the early civilizations out of which modern<br />

Europe developed, and upon the institutions of the Middle Ages. The students are<br />

referred to original sources in the library. In connection with this course, Freshmen<br />

are expected to attend a performance of the classical play presented in the fall term,<br />

and to make one visit to the Huntington Collections.<br />

H. 2 a, b, c. Modern European History. 6 units (2-0-4); first, second<br />

and third terms.<br />

Prerequisites: H. 1 a, b, c.<br />

The general political and social history of Europe from 1789 to 1939, presented<br />

as the background and development of movements underlying present conditions.<br />

Instructors: Munro, Sterling, Roosevelt.<br />

H. 4. The British Empire. 9 units (3-0-6); third term.<br />

A study of the expansion of England and of the development of empire which<br />

has led to the existing British Commonwealth. Attention will be paid to such topics<br />

as: The beginnings of English overseas commerce; England in the Age of Discovery;<br />

the growth of the Royal Navy; England's struggle against Spain, the<br />

Netherlands and France for commerce and colonies; colonial policy and the organization<br />

of the Old Empire (to 1763); the American Revolution, the effect on<br />

the Empire of the revolution in industry, transport and communication; the development<br />

of the self-governing dominions; the problem of Home Rule for India;<br />

the World War and its effect on the Empire; the Empire as a Commonwealth of<br />

Nations.<br />

H. 5 a, b. Current History. 2 units (1-0-l); first and second terms.<br />

This subject is given collaterally with senior humanities electives, and is articulated<br />

with a selected weekly journal of general information and opinion.<br />

Humanities) .
