Corporation promotion; the issue and payment of securities; underwriting; the<br />

sale of speculative securities. Discussion of the principles of capitalization, the<br />

management of corporate income, and the relation of dividend to income. Financial<br />

problems of expansion, combination, and reconstruction of corporations.<br />

This subject consists in weekly lectures and discussions of the development of<br />

economic and social organization from a broad standpoint, and includes consideration<br />

of such subjects as primitive economic and political groupings and methods,<br />

development of gild and feudal systems, evolution of the competitive and quasicompetitive<br />

systems in economic life and democratic organization in political life.<br />

A considerable amount of outside reading is expected from each student. The class<br />

meets once a week for two hours, the first being devoted to lecture and the second<br />

to discussion of the problems treated in the lecture. The number of students is<br />

limited and the seminar is open to juniors and seniors. The seminar meets at 8 p. m.<br />

on Thursday evenings at the home of Professor Laing.<br />

Ec. 48. Introduction to Industrial Relations. 9 units (3-0-6); :first,<br />

second or third terms.<br />

An examination of the causes of, and the proposed remedies for, some of the<br />

labor problems present in our modern industrial economy: unemployment, industrial<br />

accidents, illness, old age, wages, hours of work, and industrial disputes.<br />

In appraising solutions to these problems, consideration is given to (a) the history<br />

and functions of organized labor, (b) the efforts of employers to solve labor problems,<br />

especially through some of the techniques of personnel administration, and<br />

(c) the role of government in regulating labor conditions.<br />

This subject aims to give students planning to enter the general :field of manufacturing<br />

(1) information regarding special management techniques and (2) an<br />

idea as to the relationship of the production function to industrial sales, industrial<br />

:finance, and general executive policies. The scope of the subject is further indicated
