II. RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS AND SCHOLARSHIPS<br />

The character of various fellowships and scholarships available at<br />

the Institute is described below, but in making application graduate<br />

students should not designate any particular appointment.<br />

1. Institute Research Fellowships: The Institute each year<br />

appoints as Research Fellows a number of men holding the degree of<br />

Doctor of Philosophy who desire to pursue further research work.<br />

2. National Research Fellowships: These fellowships, established<br />

by the Rockefeller Foundation, are awarded by the National<br />

Research Council to men who have their doctor's degree. Fellows may<br />

choose the institution in which they desire to pursue research. Applications<br />

should be made to the National Research Council, Washington,<br />

D. C.<br />

3. Drake Fellowships and Scholarships: The income from the<br />

Drake Fund, provided by the late Mr. and Mrs. Alexander M. Drake,<br />

is used to maintain fellowships and scholarships in such numbers and<br />

amounts as the Board of Trustees determine. The recipients are<br />

designated as Drake Fellows and Drake Scholars.<br />

4. Blacker Fellowships: The Robert Roe Blacker and Nellie<br />

Can£eld Blacker Scholarship Endowment Fund, established by the<br />

late Mr. R. R. Blacker and Mrs. Blacker, provides in part for the<br />

support of graduate men engaged in research work. The recipients<br />

are designated as Blacker Fellows.<br />

5. Henry Laws Fellowships: The income from a fund given<br />

by the late Mr. Henry Laws is used to provide fellowships for research<br />

in pure science, preferably in physics, chemistry, and mathematics.<br />

The recipients are designated as Henry Laws Fellows.<br />

6. Caroline W. Dobbins Fellowships: The income from the<br />

Caroline W. Dobbins Fellowships and Scholarships Fund, provided by<br />

the late Mrs. Caroline W. Dobbins, is used to maintain fellowships<br />

and scholarships at the Institute. The recipients are designated as<br />

Caroline W. Dobbins Fellows or Caroline W. Dobbins Scholars.
