candidate and members of the Institute staff or others. In any case,<br />

b.owever, a substantial portion of the thesis must be the candidate's<br />

own exposition of his work. For special departmental regulations<br />

concerning theses, see Section VI.<br />

The thesis must be typewritten on paper of good quality, 8 Yz by<br />

11 inches, leaving a margin for binding of not less than one inch, or<br />

may consist in part of pages taken from a published article and pasted<br />

on paper of the above size. It should be preceded by a title page containing<br />

the following items: Title, Thesis by (name of candidate),<br />

In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor<br />

of Philosophy, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California,<br />

Date (year only).<br />

Before submitting his thesis to the Dean of the Graduate School,<br />

the candidate must obtain approval of it by the Chairman of his<br />

Division, and the members of his examining committee. This approval<br />

must be obtained in writing on a form which will be furnished at the<br />

office of the Dean. The candidate himself ;s responsible for allOWing<br />

sufficient time for the members of his committee to examine his thesis.<br />

6. Grades on Degree: The doctor's degree is awarded with the<br />

designations "summa cum laude," "magna cum laude," "cum laude."<br />

or without designation, in the Division of Physics, Mathematics, and<br />

Electrical Engineering, and in the Division of Civil and Mechanical<br />

Engineering, Aeronautics, and Meteorology. It is awarded without<br />

designation in the Divisions of Biology, Chemistry and Chemical<br />

Engineering, and the Geological Sciences.<br />

VI. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DOCTOR'S DEGREE<br />

In agreement with the general requirements for the doctor's degree<br />

adopted by the Committee on Graduate Study, as set forth in Section<br />

V (pages 15 2-15 5), the various divisions and departments of the<br />

Institute have adopted the following supplementary regulations.
