as to the proportion of the full tuition to be paid for such work shall<br />

be made by the Dean to the Executive Council.<br />

A student whose undergraduate work has been insufficient in<br />

amount or too narrowly. specialized, or whose preparation in his<br />

special field is inadequate, must count upon spending increased time<br />

in work for the degree.<br />

3. Admission to Candidacy: Any student admitted to work for<br />

the doctor's degree who has been in residence one term or more, who<br />

has satisfied the several departments concerned by written or oral<br />

examination or otherwise that he has a comprehensive grasp of his<br />

major and minor subjects as well as of subjects fundamental to them,<br />

who has satisfied the department of modern languages that he can<br />

read scientific German and French with reasonable facility, who has<br />

shown ability in carrying on research and whose research subject<br />

has been approved by the Chairman of the Division concerned, and<br />

whose program of study has been approved by both his major and<br />

minor departments may, on recommendation of the Chairman of<br />

the Division in which he is working, be admitted by the Committee<br />

on Graduate Study to candidacy for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.<br />

Members of the permanent Institute staff of rank higher<br />

than that of Assistant Professor are not admitted to candidacy for<br />

a higher degree. For special departmental regulations concerning<br />

admission to candidacy, see Section VI.<br />

A regular form, to be obtained from the Dean of the Graduate<br />

School, is provided for making application for admission to candidacy.<br />

Such admission to candidacy must be obtained before the close of<br />

the first term of the year in which the degree is to be conferred, and<br />

must be followed by two terms of further residence before the degree<br />

is conferred. The student himself ;s responsible for seeing that admission<br />

;s secured at the proper time.<br />

4. Examinations: The French and German examinations, prerequisite<br />

to admission to candidacy for the degree of Doctor of<br />

Philosophy, will be given in September on the afternoon of the date
