V. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY<br />
1. Major and Minor Subjects: The work for the doctor's degree<br />
must consist of scientific research and advanced studies in some<br />
branch of science or engineering, which will be termed the "major<br />
subject" of the candidate. In addition, as "minor subject" (or subjects)<br />
, studies which will give a fundamental knowledge and research<br />
point of view must be pursued in at least one other branch of science<br />
or engineering.<br />
The choice and scope of the minor subject must be approved by<br />
the departments in charge both of the major and of minor subjects,<br />
and must involve not less than 45 units of advanced study in each<br />
minor subject. Such advanced study must consist of courses which<br />
are listed as graduate courses.<br />
2. Residence: At least three years of work in residence subsequent<br />
to a baccalaureate degree equivalent to that given by the<br />
Institute are required for the doctor's degree. Of this at least one<br />
year must be in residence at the Institute. It should be understood<br />
that these are minimum requirements, and students must usually<br />
count on spending a somewhat longer time in residence.<br />
Graduate students are encouraged to continue their research<br />
during the whole or a part of the summer, but in order that such<br />
work may count in fulfilment of the residence requirements, the<br />
student must comply with the above regulations and file a registration<br />
card for such summer work in the office of the Registrar.<br />
A graduate student who, by special arrangement, is permitted to<br />
conduct a portion of his researc4 in the field, in government laboratories,<br />
or elsewhere off the campus, must file a registration card for<br />
this work in the office of the Registrar, in order that it may count<br />
in fulfilment of residence requirements. The number of units to be<br />
credited for such work shall be determined by the Dean of the Graduate<br />
School in consultation with the Chairman of the Division in<br />
which the student is carrying his major work; and a recommendation
