far as substitutions may be approved by special vote of the Committee<br />
in charge.<br />
Senior students at the Institute desiring to return for a fifth year<br />
should consult with the representative of the department in which<br />
they expect to do their major work, and make application for admission<br />
to work 'towards the higher degree on a form which can be<br />
obtained from the Dean of the Graduate School. Such students will<br />
be expected to present satisfactory scholarship qualifications, and<br />
to have demonstrated a capacity for doing advanced work.<br />
All programs of study, and applications for candidacy for the<br />
degrees of Bachelor of Science with designation and Master of<br />
Science, shall be in charge of the Committee on Courses in Science<br />
(in case the advanced work is to be in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical<br />
Engineering, Mathematics, Geology, Paleontology, Geophysics, or<br />
Biology), or of the Committee on Courses in Engineering (in case<br />
the work is to be in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering,<br />
Aeronautics or Meteorology); and recommendations to the Faculty<br />
for the award of the degree shall be made by the appropriate committee,<br />
all such actions being taken in general after consideration<br />
and recommendation by the department concerned.<br />
A student before entering upon work for the degree of Bachelor<br />
of Science with designation or of Master of Science should, after consultation<br />
with the department concerned, submit a plan of study<br />
(together with his previous record if he transfers from another institution),<br />
and make application to the Committee in charge for<br />
acceptance as a candidate for that degree. Application forms for<br />
admission to candidacy for these degrees may be obtained from the<br />
Registrar, and must be submitted not later than November fifteenth<br />
of the school year in which the degree is to be granted.<br />
II. REGISTRATION<br />
1. The regulations governing registration and student responsibilities<br />
as given for undergraduate students on pages 98-104 of the<br />
catalogue apply also to fifth-year students.
