applying for assistantships or fellowships need not make separate<br />
application for admission to graduate standing, but should make application<br />
for appointment by February 15. See pages 164-165.<br />
3. Admission to graduate standing does not of itself admit to<br />
candidacy for the degree of Bachelor of Science with designation, or<br />
Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy.<br />
II. TUITION FEES<br />
Beginning with the Fall Term, <strong>1941</strong>, the tultlon charge for all<br />
students newly registering for graduate work will be $360 per year,<br />
payable in three equal installments of $120 at the beginning of each<br />
term. Graduate students who cannot devote full time to their studies<br />
are allowed to register only under special circumstances. Students<br />
desiring permission to register for less than 33 units should petition<br />
therefor on a blank to be obtained from the Registrar. If such<br />
reduced registration is permitted, the tuition will be at the rate of<br />
$90 a term for 25 to 32 units, and at the rate of $3.60 per unit for<br />
less than 25 units, with a minimum of $36 a term. If the courses<br />
registered for do not correspond to the full educational facilities made<br />
available to the student, additional tuition will be charged.<br />
Graduate students who have been regularly registered for the full<br />
academic year 1940-41 will continue at the tuition rate of $300 per<br />
year or $100 per term as long as they are in continuous attendance<br />
and working toward a definite degree. For any such students who<br />
receive permission to register for less than the normal program of<br />
study, the following tuition rates will be charged: 25 to 32 units,<br />
$75 per term; less than 25 units, $3 per unit per term, with a minimum<br />
of $ 3 0 per term.<br />
The payment of tuition by graduate students is required (a) without<br />
reference to the character of the work of the student, which may<br />
consist in the prosecution of research, in independent reading, or in<br />
the writing of a thesis or other dissertation, as well as in attendance<br />
at regular classes; (b) without reference to the number of terms in<br />
which the student has already been in residence; and (c) without<br />
reference to the status of the student as an appointee of the Institute,
