Manzella and Bourret ham it up, but the going gets rough after dark. Burnett checks his splits with one of the
A slightly poorer tha n usual 7-10 season
featured some : lose matches. After beating Whittier
twice in dual meets, Tech was edged by 1 point in
the SClAC fmals. Revenge soon came in the District
Meet by a not-so-close score of 218 to 291. The
"meet of the season" was against Ambassador,
whose superior depth slightly outweighed a 1-2
Cal tech finish. Everyone performed well - most ran
their best home course times ever, breaking personal
records by incredible (!6 to 1!6 minute) amounts.
Throughout the season, Celia Peterson devastated
all her competition. She ran a solid 4th position on
the men's team, and won the SCIAC women's
championship by 3 minutes. At press time, she had
run a 2:41:48 marathon, one of the alltime ten best
women's times in the world.
At season's end, the varsity squad (in order) was
composed of Bourret, George, Gould, Peterson,
McArthur, Loh, & Gray. Rob Bourret was given :he
the walkway.
Bryan Sutooless made the balcony, and Heiman worked
the lights for the play, a parody of Casablanca written by
Neil Cotter. Chris uP" Sexton, as Rick (remember Bogart?)
held the leave papers for Doug Jones, who as Professor
Victor Lowlife, was trying to escape Caltech with the secret
of the Bozon Bomb. Lyn Brown won hearts as Foxy R oxy,
professor's wife and Rick's old flame from MIT (re: the
infamous Foxy Roxy guide to MIT nwles).
The houses wer·.; characterized as the other actors tried to
steal the bomb. Good performances by Louis Testa as the
inspector, Larry Friedrich as the mole underground, Larry
Lader as random Page boy, C. T. as Lloydie hot after Rick,
Joe Miller as a Darb, Bryan Dunkeld as Ma Bell and a plane,
John Lovberg as Sam with a flute. Of course, the bomb
went off and the Bozo twins were left standing.
After Interhouse, the term was not done. There was a
two-house party with Ruddock. We won Interhouse
swimming and softball.
The women of Fleming organized a Fleming women 's
dinner and went to Kebakian's where Z. Newsome and
Maurisa got chided for not cleaning their plates.
The Big Red Flag was stolen and eventually was found
wrapped around the Blacker House president, whose??
friends?? had deposited him in the Alley 6 archway. He
declined to comment on his abductors.

Ken sacrificed his dry clothes.
The Bell passed to Ken Rousseau, with Jeff Record as his
Brikowski relieved Larry Lesyna as secetllry, and Dave
Adams took over Mike Machado's job as treasllra. (Joe
DiGiorgio was finagled into becoming debt collector, a wise
choice, as he lived next door to the person with the largest
nmning debt. "Please ... one more call to Houston!") The
The last match with Page in Illtahouse tennis was the
object of much debate, being originally rained out, and
re-re-scheduled. Fleming took second in Interhouse tellnis
and secolld ill track, which was rained out for a week. It was
a wet term, ill more ways than just rain.
Third Tenn
The frosh really shaped up third term. They beat the Page
boys in a football challenge and Lloyd in a soccer challenge.
On the other hand, without these frosh victories, house
morale would have taken a beating. Page beat us in
Interhouse volleyball, Discobolus volleyball and Interhouse
basketball . . . For the first rime in many years, Fleming did
not take either the Discobolus or In terhouse truphies.
During the frosh challenge, the Page boys attacked the
lounge, however, back in our element. a lot of Page boys got
wet. Speaking of wet, wonders never ceased, as about 15
Blacker moles attempted to shower Ken. Boxed into Lower
5, they were picked off one by one, as the Big Red Machine
rolled in force.
Housing had decided to spend bucks to improve student
houses. Fleming decided to have the Alley 1 wall knocked
out to make an Alley 1·6 kitchell. This might be started this
summer.
Carol T., Coleen Ruby and Pat Huber (Lovberg 0 11
broccoli), assisted by the Fleming waiters, took second in
the seven··house cooking contest - willlling 5250 for
Fleming.
Dean Brackett, Joe DiGiorgio and Jesse Slater were
picked as UCCs to take [he place of graduating seniors C. T.,
Chris and Ed Keller. Wendell Miyaji, Leslie Paxton and Neil
Cotter remained as old hands for next year.
The final sports standings were: seco.';d in volleyball, third
in basketball and third in football. The Page boys challenged
us to a soccer game, which we won.
Outdoor olympiad came the day after alumni day - so
many older Fleming friends dropped by to say hello. The
frosh Rose Bowl nlll took 15 min. 23 sec., close to the
record. 771e final stand:";gs weill: juniors, seniors;
sophomores and, finally, frosh.
Third term found Ralph Page officially gone; Wheeler,
Campos, Rencidy and Cisar officially fled and Walker
Moreno, Mortin and Lee unofficially retained. Platenak
returned from Spring break with one useless member, and
yours truly fmally escaped from you-know-who, only to be
made a totally apathetic 3rd term KOTG. Rehab struck the
courtyard and the fussball room thanks to Reder and
Magliocco, respectively (the plants may last till Rotation
four square next year). A thoroughly enjoyable semi-formal
dinner was sponsored by Dave and Sheila, and held in
exchange with all-female Brooks College in Long Beach
(masterminded by the top executive 3 stooges: Mag Mr. Bill
& 11). Don Chin al}d Steve Chaiken opened up a whole new
field in ping pong flicking and Richard Willson was elected
new House BOCREP (also under the auspices of Steve).
The highlights of third term were, as usual, PCD(E)
and Ditch Day. The former was the best in this writer's
memory, complete with Flaming Love-ln, Lloyd
refreshments, and Ruddock glass. The latter offered seve ral
brute-force stacks, notably the Don Chin-Nelson Lee stack
(the last to be broken) and some interesting finesse stacks,
e.g. Rotherberg's chess, Chaiken's musicians and Tsang s
Biblical verses. The sophomore RA's, Drs. D avid and Sheila
Crewther, announced their intention to return to the wilds
of outback Australia and herd sheep and a farewell party
was given in their honor at which they were presented with
a silver tea set. Courtyard waterfights carne into ascendancy
during finals week, and Chaiken vowed he was going to
graduate.

RUDDOCK HOUSE
HOME OF GODS A D WARRIORS.
AND ME WHO CA HANDLE IT.
77-78 definitely proved, as other years before it,
to be a year in Ruddock's history.
Frosh Hassle Week started the year and
began as the Sophomores brought in the
infamous Professor 4.5 as their Pledgemaster.
In spite of many clues, and the 'help' of
the Hape incompetent Junior Class, the
Frosh finally had to be told who the Prof
was. In a uniquely subtle form of violent
revenge, the. Frosh had two representatives
escort Professor 4.5 to the Coffeehouse.
The Alley challenges showed a bit of
creative style this year, ranging from meatpattie-skipping
to running into walls. Amazingly
enough, no injuries were sustained (much
to the chagrin of those who wanted nerd
burning for time as a challenge).
For Interhouse, Ruddock became the
epitome of 'plastic'. A multitude of Grand
Dragons emerged, lead by Mark Guhrud,
who organized the creation of our courtyard
into the club of the future, the A rcturian
Ideal.
Running through the hall playing "The
Ride" became one of Valhala's favorite
pastimes, and treating him accordingly
became one of Ruddock's pastimes. When
drastic measures seemed in order, he was
covered with various and sundry disgusting
organic materials and promptly devoured by
hordes of enormous roaches (which seemed to
emerge from a secret base in Alley One).
The Bufus became heavily addicted to
highly dangerous and powerful hallucinogens,
threatening to undermine the athletic strength
of the House.
The painting of the Alley Three sun mural
and of the Alley Two haUway was completed
in original fashion, largely due to the efforts
of the late, great Mark Gubrud.
Elections contained the highly contested
four·way race for the presidency , which
was won by our own magnanimous Ernie.
After three years of excellent and well·
appreciated service, our RA's, Ajit and Rajini,
are leaving for greater glories. We wish them
the best of luck wherever they go and our
gratitude for all they have done for us. We
will miss them. At the same time we give
a hearty welcome to our new RA's, Stu and
Lynn Blackburn. We also wish them good luck.
