pronounced “doughnut” shape, as is expected for a corannulene “bowl” adsorbed on its base. The phase-transition is explained by a change in local orientation of the bowl with respect to the surface plane. That is, in the achiral (4x4) structure the molecules is adsorbed in a local five-fold symmetric complex (substrate ignored), while during the chiralsymmetry breaking transition a tilt occurs and the molecule is oriented with the C 6 ring closest to the surface. The results will be compared with observations made for the Cu(110) surface and implications on further functional modifications of surface with geodesic molecules will be discussed.

Kappes Lehrstuhl für die Physikalische Chemie Mikroskopischer Systeme, Institut für Physikalische Chemie, Universität Karlsruhe (TH), D-76128 Karlsruhe, Germany Electron-impact induced fragmentation of C 60 molecules leads to the formation of small fullerene ions which can be used as building blocks for fabrication of new solids. We applied the low energy cluster beam deposition method, LECBD, to grow monodisperse solids comprising of C n cages exclusively, 50 ≤ n ≤ 60 [1]. The growth of C n solids is governed by aggregation of the carbon cages due to reactive sites (adjacent pentagons 2AP) located at outer cage side [2]. The quasi-covalent intercage bonds (2AP-2AP) are responsible for the formation of stable C n oligomers. The related intercage binding energy increases with decreasing cage size from 2.2 eV to 2.6 eV. All C n films exhibit a common HOMO band centered around E B ∼ 2.5 eV, which mirrors the electronic contribution from the stabilizing intercage bonds. Two well distinguishable HOMO side bands (E B ∼ 1.8 eV and 3.3 eV) mirror the reaction centers not involved in the intercage bonds. Among all investigated C n the C 58 films exhibit the lowest ionization potential of 6.5 eV. The HOMO-LUMO gap of the C n films ranges from 0.8 eV up to 1.7 eV [3]. C n films exhibit a high ability to form hydrides. Sublimation of hydrogenated films reveals a broad spectrum of C n H x (0 < x < 50) species which exhibit a considerably lower desorption energy than that found for bare C n phase. This indicates a considerable weakening of the covalent intercage bonds followed by scission of C n oligomers [4].
