EARLY CHILDHOOD SCREENING<br />

Calling all 3-Year-Olds! It’s time for Screening!<br />

Early Childhood Screening provides an opportunity for children and<br />

their parents to participate in a health and developmental screening<br />

after their third birthday. State law requires screening for all<br />

children entering public school kindergarten, ideally at 3 years old.<br />

Identifying potential health, developmental problems or concerns<br />

early allows time for intervention and remediation during the<br />

critical formative years. Families participating in Early Childhood<br />

Screening may be referred to community health and educational<br />

services including School Readiness and ECFE.<br />

Early Childhood Screening includes:<br />

• Immunization records<br />

• Hearing and vision<br />

• Speech and developmental screening<br />

• Height and weight<br />

• Summary interview with parents<br />

What Happens During Screening?<br />

The parent attends the entire screening process with their<br />

child along with a team of specialists. Your child will have a<br />

developmental progress review by a speech/language clinician.<br />

A review of your child’s vision, hearing, height, weight and<br />

immunization history will be conducted by one of our health<br />

professionals. The parent/s will then participate in a family factors<br />

interview to review the screening process and talk about any<br />

concerns they may have.<br />

Who Needs to be Screened?<br />

All children living in District 728 who are 3, 4, or 5 years old and<br />

not currently enrolled in kindergarten NEED to participate in this<br />

FREE screening program before entering kindergarten, or have an<br />

equivalent screening from a doctor. Age three is the recommended<br />

age for screening. Children who attend Head Start or Early<br />

Childhood Special Education Services programs may not have to<br />

participate in Early Childhood Screening.<br />

Is the Program Required?<br />

Yes. Minnesota state law requires that your child must be screened<br />

for enrollment in a public school. Children are not permitted to enter<br />

public school without having Early Childhood Screening and up-todate<br />

immunizations.)<br />

If you are planning to send your child to private or home school the<br />

screening is not required by law, however, we still encourage you to<br />

participate. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to find out how<br />

your child is developing.<br />
