Describe your background and your experience Dancing began as a passion for me as a small child. I danced the Chinese dance in my first Nutcracker ballet when I was 7 years old, and have been dancing in some form ever since. While the majority of my dance background and training has been in the areas of ballet, tap and jazz dance, I have also had a great deal of experience in musical theatre, and even took some classes in baton twirling. I’ve had the opportunity to train under some wonderful instructors including Al Reller in Hibbing, MN who gave me my first opportunities as a musical theatre choreographer while I was still in high school. I have also studied under Rita Anderson in Ham Lake, Zoe Sealy at the University of MN and other numerous instructors through the Dance Masters of America organization. I have been teaching dance now for over 25 years, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to share my passion for dance with others through this community education program. What can one expect when attending your class? In the dance classes one can expect opportunities to move from basic to more challenging dance progressions. As a young dancer you could expect to explore rhythm, style and choreography while working on a specific dance to perform at the end of the program. Fitness classes also offer participants opportunity to start at a basic level and progress at their own pace. This ensures that people of all fitness levels can participate. What level of experience is needed? The classes are designed to fit participants at almost any level. So, no experience is needed. What are the benefits of enrolling children in Community Education dance classes? One benefit of enrolling children in Community Education dance is an opportunity to explore dance at a non-competitive level. The shorter length program gives students an opportunity to try out a dance class with minimal commitment. It’s a wonderful way for children of all ages to be more active socially. Also, anytime someone enrolls in a dance class they are benefiting themselves both physically and mentally. What advice do you have for someone considering a new fitness venture? Go for it! As a fitness instructor, I can’t tell you what a privilege it is to see someone come to a class for the first time, and then watch them progress physically over the weeks.
