all those, therefore, in whom we see the marks of adopti<strong>on</strong> shine forth, let us in the mean time<br />

reck<strong>on</strong> those to be the s<strong>on</strong>s of God until the books are opened, (Revelati<strong>on</strong> 20:12,) which will<br />

thoroughly bring all things to view. It bel<strong>on</strong>gs, it is true, to God al<strong>on</strong>e now to know them that are<br />

his, (2 Timothy 2:19,) <strong>and</strong> to separate at least the lambs from the kids; 221 but it is our part to reck<strong>on</strong><br />

in charity all to be lambs who, in a spirit of obedience, submit themselves to Christ as their Shepherd<br />

222 , who betake themselves to his fold, <strong>and</strong> remain there c<strong>on</strong>stantly. It is our part to set so high a<br />

value up<strong>on</strong> the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which he c<strong>on</strong>fers peculiarly <strong>on</strong> his elect, that they shall be<br />

to us the seals, as it were, of an electi<strong>on</strong> which is hid from us.<br />

<strong>Philippians</strong> 4:4-9<br />

4. Rejoice in the Lord alway: <strong>and</strong> again I say, 4. Gaudete in Domino semper, iterum dico,<br />

Rejoice.<br />

5. Let your moderati<strong>on</strong> be known unto all 5. Moderatio vestra nota sit omnibus<br />

7. And the peace of God, which passeth all 7. Et pax Dei, quae exsuperat omnem<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing, shall keep your hearts <strong>and</strong> minds intelligentiam, custodiet corda vestra et<br />

through Christ Jesus.<br />

8. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are 8. Quod reliquum est, fratres, quaecunque<br />

things are just, whatsoever things are pure, quaecunque pura, quaecunque amabilia,<br />

whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things quaecunque h<strong>on</strong>esta: si qua virtus, et qua laus,<br />

are of good report; if there be any virtue, <strong>and</strong> if haec cogitate.<br />

9. Those things, which ye have both learned, 9. Quae et didicistis, et suscepistis, et audistis,<br />

<strong>and</strong> received, <strong>and</strong> heard, <strong>and</strong> seen in me, do: <strong>and</strong> et vidistis in me: haec facite, et Deus pacis erit<br />

the God of peace shall be with you.<br />

4. Rejoice in the Lord It is an exhortati<strong>on</strong> suited to the times; for, as the c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> of the pious<br />

was exceedingly troublous, <strong>and</strong> dangers threatened them <strong>on</strong> every side, it was possible that they<br />

might give way, overcome by grief or impatience. 223 Hence he enjoins it up<strong>on</strong> them, that, amidst<br />

circumstances of hostility <strong>and</strong> disturbance, they should nevertheless rejoice in the Lord, 224 as<br />
